jodiegillies wrote:the problem I have with all the others is that either you cant change servers and countries -or they want to charge you to do so.It is quick and easy with astril....if it is directly on your laptop....I recently switched it to the router(got the one they recommended and paid thru the nose for it and to have it connected) as they advised me to...and it is now SHITE.....so slow...and i cant change it all the time like I used to-you need a degree in tech to do it yourself....so....I am thinking of changing back to individual laptop VPN's...a pain...but my only way around...I need to have a VPN that can change countries and servers on a daily ,sometimes hourly basis...I watch aussie and US and kiwi content...some VPN's dont even have aussie servers...rather shortsighted I think!Any advice???

I also have the Asus RT-N16 and as I posted above, using the Astril plugin is extremely slow. I've found the desktop client to be much faster when using the web mode instead of openvpn. The only time I use openvpn mode is to get google voice to think I'm in the US to make free US landline/cellphone calls.

The only downside to using the desktop client is that only 1 device can use it at a time. I have 2 people in the house that would like to be using astril at the same time, but can't ... I guess I could just buy another account but it seems like a waste when what we really want is a fast vpn on the router.

Is there something like a simple step by step user guide on how to make this work. I went through the help tips etc. and I am getting dizzy. Tried changing servers, changing modes etc. etc., but not getting anywhere :(

Guys, I am not joking. Don't tell me that this is VPN number 3 this year I spent good money on, and is not working. It seems that for some of you it is working, so there must be a way. I am not a software engineer, and only a simple user. So I must be doing something wrong :(

Andreas, i've got Astrill and it's been sensational. I've not tried to put it on a router, it's only needed on one machine at a time.

Simple interface and it always works.

For astrill, and as we are in China, the fastest servers are those from the US (LA, West cost, or Miami, St louis...). The HK servers are pretty useless for us (as most of other servers actually).

I don't know what I did, but i got it working now. I am still confused about all the different modes and how to use them.

The irony funny thing is maybe the CT/CU US peering is better than their HKG/intra-Asia/terrestrial to EU peering!? LOL.

Andreas, if things doesn't work..open Astrill then on the help or settings just reset it. One time I got a server locked and I can't change server.. I just reset it and it works... :)

As i've given up trying to be a good guy seeing as Telecom people recently have been f****g me up the **s recently, I've taken a look at some of the VPN options.

Astrill -
I'm not impressed with Astrill.

Had to talk to their tech support 2 separate times for issues, both their own.
First one - the SMS signup message doesn't really work.
Second one, their router stuff is pretty crappily done.

I could see why it didn't work, and told the support guy why too. Long pause, then came back with yes, the developers are aware of that. Uhuh. If I wanted to be a beta tester, I would have them pay me.
Their PPTP stuff seems to work better than their OpenVPN options from here, but its still not that stable.
I think longest connection time I've had so far is about 40 minutes before a reset.

I've resolved the issues I had, and its cheap, but thats about all they have going for them.

VyperVPN (GoldenFrog) on the other hand was great.
Days of uptime, and the service worked.

StrongVPN - haven't used personally but have had clients use and complain, and other clients use and rave, so no strong views on that.
