just join some activities you are interested in.. sports, cultural stuff, volunteering... heaps of things to do, lots of fun people doing them.

I'm a very confident person once I'm comfortable and in the loop with things.
But coming to events on my own, I am very shy.

I hope I build up enough guts before I come.

Hello Sarah and welcome to the forum. Am sure you will make many friends before and after you arrive. Feel free to PM me sometime if wish to know of places within easy distance of Shanghai for those times to come when you feel like exploring. I am Chinese and married to an Australian. We live an hour out of Shanghai but have lived in or visited many places from Hangzhou to Changzhou (south and north within easy travel by train) as well as otehr areas.

Shanghai Expat has three weekly organized events for meeting people/friends: the Saturday morning coffee, the Sunday coffee meeting, and the Wednesday night mixer. You can find links describing these three events on the Announcements of Events forum here:

If you are shy about meeting new people, I recommend the Saturday morning mixer. It's very low pressure, with lots of different kinds of people who will talk to you and try to find common interests.

Welome to the forum Sarah. It's relatively easy to make new friends in SH. I went to one offical shexpat meeting in the past but didn't find anyone in the age range you mentioned. There are pubs that are full of ppl in their 18-30. You can find me if one of those on weekends. If u ever want to hang out with and just drop me a pm. Enjoy Sh :]

If you girls are near 杨浦 and like sport, just pm me we can go sometimes to the gym together or something

As Woyechijing wrote, you are more than welcome to join us on Saturday. Although we are no longer an "offical SHEx event", we didn't let it stop us from meeting.

Just come to the Coffeebean at the ground floor of the "Cloud nine" shoppingmall (LongZhiMeng). The Coffeebean is in the back, close to the Citybank. And the mall is located on top of line 2 metrostop "Zhongshanpark" . We are there between from 11:30 ( Most show up at 12:00), and around 14:00 we go for lunch.

in china is a kind different with onther country,in other countries maybe you can know some people they are nice in church ..in onther place i can't sure .and by the way what kind of friends you want to know depend on how long time you want live in here.

I've made friends with a very nice girl who is very close to my age.
I am ready to leave now and So excited.
I will post again when I arrive and decide to go out for some casual drinks, once Im settled in.

Hi Sarah, Welcome to Shanghai, I'm sure you will have fun living here and also have no problems making some new friends who can show you around!!.

I am here at the moment, allthough I don't live here permenatly, I am from Oxford, England. When I am in Shanghai I live in Huangpu, (not far from People's Square) so its quite easy to get anywhere.

If you need to know anything or want to have a chat with another english speaker over a coffee or drink do let me know I'd be glad to help you, Send me a PM with your query and if I don't know I can find out for you.

As to socailising if you want to meet fellow westerners, (ie European's, American's and fellow Aussie's) I can recommend O'Maileys Bar and the British Bulldog Bar, which are both full of people like us!!!

I am a sporty person so if you want a game of Babminton, Table Tennis, Swim, Gym or Sauna Let me know, My local gym in Huangpu, (just off Lujibang Rd) has an indoor pool and separate Sauna's for ladies & men.

Last tip for now is install and learn how to use the International Version of QQ, its the Chinese equivalent to Facebook, which in case you don't allready know is banned in China!!! This is a good way to make contact with locals and chat online etc.. (although you may need some translation software to help you as well!!...lol!!).
