Not in any way connected to this. I did buy a Classic 800 for my apt recently, and am very satisfied with the quality and service.

It's sometimes hard to judge what a product looks like when pics are taken in a studio so we have gone ahead and taken some amateur digital photos of the King Turbo 1100.

You may check out the detailed features and dimensions at

Do you guys also carry char coals? I shipped my Weber charcoal grille which hopefully will arrive after the Olympics and wondering where I could find good qualify char coal.

I'm also interested in gas grille but not sure if I can do that in high rise apartments. I still have two months before I find a long term place but it will be most likely be one of those high/mid rise APTs in Pudong as I won't afford a place with backyard with my housing allownace.

The photoes above looks like taken from one of those APTs. Is Shanghai APT pretty friendly with BBQing?

The photo is taken from a roof top balcony on the 8th floor surrounding by skyscrapers. People have ordered gas grills up to the 31 st floor in high rises.

What floor do you live on and is it a Chinese compound or expatriate compound?

We carry a heavy duty charcoal grill

Thanks. I don't have a place yet. I currently lives in the serviced apartment section in Ramada Pudong in Jinqiao area - no outside area here - no BBQ.

I will probably look around here (Jinqiao) or around Century Park for a long term place. IF the new place has a BBQable area, it will be awesome but not sure how many of the APTs will have those features.

I don't need a charcoal grill as I already have one. I might buy gas grill (if my new place is good for bbq) for everyday use and spare the charcoal grill for a special occasion.

I believe Charcoal grill IS the real BBQ but too much of a hassle for everyday use.

Well I would think most places do have a BBQable area - most new apartments do have an open balcony so the question remains on what size grill you can fit on it. You might have to go with a more compact grill like the King Classic 800 if you dont have much to play with.

It"s much more convenient to use a gas grill in Shanghai because the tanks can be delivered to your home which makes the whole process completely hassle free.

Ya your right! Charcoal is great tasting but when you just want to throw a couple quick steaks for yourself on the grill as you already know it can be a chore at times to get it going.

I am also running the King Turbo 1100 gas grill and an off-set charcoal smoker when we really want to throw a party.

I sooooooo wish I could have one of these!! They look fantastic and bring back wonderful memories of back home when we would soak the fresh hickory bark that fell off of our tree's and toss it in the BBQ... heaven!

We tried BBQ'uing here on our balcony and the damn neighbors above kept calling security complaining of the smell.. yet we've never called security when they cook their nasty river fish, etc.

Arrrghh! Sorry to hear that - Ya some people just don't get it! I presume you were using a charcoal grill and smoked them out right? We can even smell the meat stick guys using charcoal from a block away so I would stick to a gas grill if your living in a high-rise.

Or you can play the Guanxi game invite the security guards and neighbors over for some grilled chicken head.

Oxymoron.....City carries Kingsford Charcoal pretty much year round.

Snippets....Same here...Except they were worried about the flames as I started the BBQ. Call about every other time thinking the place is burning down. Compromise was I talked to security. Had them come to the apartment and see I was using a kettle grill and there was no danger...and promised to have a fire extinguisher handy whenever I grill.

Raw fried potatoes with onions , red wine, sauteed mushrooms, and a nice sirloin (FreshMart) on the grill last night.

beartrap....sorry to hijack the thread into Charcoal!

I've had my 800 for about a week, and have grilled on it 5 times...ahhh the good old days are back again! I'm on the 22nd fl of a Chinese bldg, with only 1 above me. This size is perfect for my normal mid size balcony, Ibut I did take off 1 of the wings. My balcony is enclosed, which is a big +. Very little smoke coming out, I don't think it's going to be a problem. When it comes to apt management and neighbors; it's don't ask, don't tell for me. One major consideration that they didn't remind me of when I purchased...your beer consumption WILL go up!

Beartrap or Catur,

any trouble buying propane for the grill? Heard claims about restrictions for foreigners on purchasing propane themselves.

Emerson

We bring the first tank of propane for you when you order a grill upon delivery. Propane is not our business but we offer it as part of the service to get you started and leave you with all the contacts to get the propane delivered in your area.

Option 1

Shanghai Gas Company basically has a monopoly on the propane. The cheapest option would be to deal directly with them but you would need to go visit them with your ID and if that dont work just ask a Chinese friend to do it for you. They will deliver directly to your home if you live below the 8 th floor.

Option 2:

There are tons of middle men delivering gas that already have set relationships with friends working in the Shanghai gas company and they will deliver anywhere anytime on any floor. You will need to pay 20 to 30 rmb more per refill but its completely hassle free and don't need to go through getting the license. Just call them up and a few hours later they take your empty tank and replace it with the full one.

Price:

Pricing will vary depending on the middle man your using and how far he needs to travel to get to your place but you can use this as a guide line for a large tank.

First tank: RMB 280 (around RMB 100 will be returned to you when you give that tank back.)

Refills: RMB 150

Ya, we will invite the BBQ King Bikini girls over for a feast!!!!!!

I would say beer can chicken is one of my top 5 favorites to cook on a gas grill. If you have never tried do it ASAP because its easy and you will have the moistest chicken you have ever eaten in your life!!!!!

This basic variation of the "beer in the butt" chicken recipe combines the flavors of a great spice rub with the flavors steamed out of the beer can.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hours, 30 minutes
Ingredients:

* 1 whole chicken (4-5 pounds)
* 1 12 ounce can beer (room temperature)
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
* 2 teaspoons olive oil
* 1 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, crushed
* Juice of 1 lemon
* For Rub:
* 1 teaspoon paprika
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped
* 1 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, ground
* 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

Preparation:
Combine all rub ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.

Remove giblets and the neck from chicken. Sprinkle all over with rub, including cavity. Open can of beer and discard half of it. Place, minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, lemon juice, and pepper flakes in it. Make sure to pierce two more holes on the top of beer can. Place chicken on top of can.

Preheat grill. Place birds grill balanced by the beer cans. Grill over indirect medium heat for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until internal temperature of thigh is 180 degrees. Remove chicken when finished cooking and let sit (with beer can still intact), for 10 minutes before carving.

You can basically invent your own rub if you cant find the ingredients - just add a bunch of cool stuff to the beer can and let it roast on the Barbie for 1h 15 min... I roast it for a shorter time because the chickens are much smaller in China.

not a good idea - coke and chicken. sorry snap.

chemically, what should and would happen, is that the coke and sugar would break down the muscle of the chicken too quickly and turn it into a mass of mush.

you may get lucky, but stick w/ beer. and baste with a sugar based product later.

now HAM and coke is ok (actually, quite fabulous). it's a tougher muscle. wait till fall or winter. and i'll help you out w/ that. when i cooked my coked up ham for my neighbors they loved it. till i told them what i did.

good luck.

Beartrap

Would you happen to have contact information for propane supplies near the Zhangjiang subway station? We were looking into getting a grill but were told by Shanghai Gas they don't have any one who would deliver out here.

Thanks

Yes if you go directly to the Shanghai gas company you could have issues because it could be too far but when we sell our grills we make sure that every client no matter how far they live are able to get propane. Our primary delivery guy will be able to deliver to you although I believe he would charge you a small delivery fee on top of the price of the gas.

This is not our business but we like to help him out by giving him more business because he is a good guy. Right now we primarily contract him out to deliver gas to our clients.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at bbq@barbecue-king.com or call 61325005 ext 113 and ask to speak with Ian.

Beartrap, one of your grills is going to have a new home at my place next spring, so save me one! I will get something sorted out with my management company; who knows, maybe hand out "barbecuing for dummies" or something!
