Best 3G? China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom?

Postby Paul Carr » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:24 pm

Hi Folks,

I am presently in Shenzhen. I intend to do some travelling around China. I'm posting to the Shanghaiexpat forum because it has an excellent dedicated forum here to technology isssues.

I'd like to know which of the Chinese mobile operators, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, has the best 3G coverage in China? I presently have China Unicom. It's okay for Shenzhen. But, earlier this year, I went to Wuhan and it didn't work at all. I use a Huawei MIFI device with my Apple ITouch.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

generally speaking only china unicom has nation wide roaming at no extra cost and works with international 3G handsets. China Telecom is CDMA/EVDO 3G (almost dog slow), china mobile has a special 3G wont work with ANY handsets other then their own. Data is generally roaming free. All depends on ur needs and package.

just use unicom where you can get a 3g signal and china mobile as a backup on edge. you will pretty much be guaranteed edge almost anywhere populated in china. running on 2g, you can re-use the same equipment.

Thanks for your replies. My Huawei MIFI device converts 3g signal to a WIFI signal which can be picked up by my Apple ITouch. I don't think it'll work with China Mobile edge. Or maybe it can?

My experience is ctually that unicom 3G is the worst. Spotty coverage, unstable, 800 ms ping and never more than 20kb sec. Telecom and mobile 3G are both more solid, but they won't work on your phone. You basically have to buy the phone from their store. Ive raced unicom and telecom in the shanghai metro, unicom is like 5 times slower

Which of the 3 services has the best coverage nationwide? I couldn't even get my china unicom to work at all in Wuhan when I visited earlier this year. Then, as soon as I left the city on the train, within a few minutes of leaving the train station actually, it worked again.

That's weird, my experience has been opposite. Have been using China Unicom 3G card now for about a year and it has been fantastic. Use it when I need to access the internet from my laptop when I am out of office, or simply as backup when there are issues with the office internet. Worked fine in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and various cities in Jiangsu/Zhejiang. Worked even in the high speed train when I tried it between Shanghai and Beijing. I also have a separate 3G SIM card (Using Lenovo Lephone) and it is stable as well as fast.

China Telecom has been the worst bought the card in Shenzhen was never been able to use it even once although they say access is free for until the end of the year if within Guangdong province. The provided access details simply do not work and their CS seems staffed by incompetents. Have just canceled it earlier this month when I was in Shenzhen they still say I am liable for two months will need to return in July when the invoices are out.

Haven't tried China Mobile so can't give a review here.

i get pretty good speeds from unicom. 350ms latency to the US and 800kbps down. you should be able to connect via china mobile EDGE with your mifi.

I think china mobile edge serves most of the country. If u look at the avg persons phone that's what they're using. It has extra fees for roaming but the coverage is nationwide and the fees are the lowest and throughput is good enough for basic browsing. It's a shame their 3G is some cryptic standard because I used it from a USB stick before and it was quite good.

Just bought the unicom USB device with 3G a month ago, one year contract for 1300 RMB.

Got it because I couldnt get my email anymore in Shanghai and it worked perfectly with it. A few days after I bought it, my emails restarted to work.... So long story short, I want to sell my 3G device with the one year contract. If anybody interested, PM me.

Thanks.

with an ipod touch who really cares if it's just for web browsing? i'd rather use opera mini on EDGE than a full mobile browser on 3g.

Well i'll revisit this now that I got a new phone with HSDPA.. turns out China unicom is quite fast now. Sometimes going well over 1mbps. I'm shocked at how fast it can load even US sites now.. Just don't expect it to be any good with an old 3G phone

EDGE surfing would be fine for me since I don't really use 3G (well 2.75g in this case) to browse heavy websites or anything media related, only to view text-based articles, information, etc. But China Mobile EDGE totally suck balls... It's straight up unstable and crappy because the speed is just too darn slow. Not sure if this is just me and my phone =\ oh well.

China Unicom 3G is recommended if you want to have a "good 3G" connection. I'm happy to switched from Mobile to Unicom, thanks to my new lumia 800.

Does anyone know if the China Unicom USB dongle is locked? I would like to use it for international travel with a local carrier's SIM.

Thanks

No problems with Whatsapp so it's definitely not a China Unicom problem. Check your phone settings.

I have had the same problem with gmail. Even tough sometimes Gmail can be connected but the connection is very unreliable.
You need a VPN. VPN PPTP is blocked so you will need a L2TP or openVPN solution. It is not as difficult as it sounds. Once set up, it will be working like a dream.
Solution for blocked websites? Try BreakWall VPN ( breakwall.net ) ! One account for many servers (including fast servers in Hong Kong and Japan) and three simultaneous users. Only we specialize in China.
