So what you two are saying is that none of you actually got the 3 advices I would think every foreigner got when they first sat foot in China.

1. If you have money, you can do every thing you want
2. Nothing is for free. (The keyword here is NOTHING) You may not pay with money, but you WILL pay! You may not pay today, but you WILL pay!
3. Do NOT be a stupid blue eyed idiot and fall "in love" with a KTV girl!

I have a friend who had a old friend visiting from the US. He did the same thing as you two, fell in love like an idiot newbie and to make things worse he actually went back to the US, divorced his wife and began planning marrying the girl, to bring her to the US.
We foreigners proud ourselves with being organized, structured, logically thinking etc etc, and then we go and do some shiat like that.....

is one able to go into these places by oneself - i.e. without a group? How much you looking at in all, to wake up next morning with a beauty and feeling rather good?
The Vatican is against surrogate mothers. Good thing they didn't have that rule when Jesus was born.

Going alone, I went alone once just for the heck of it but it was only cause I am good friends this particular MAMA san and her lovely entourage so it was like going to chill with my lady friends. Besides we have liquor stored there and it is a place i am familiar with... this is key.

I will never go alone to a place i am not familiar with...it can be bothersome... besides its always more fun in the company of friends.

however if you are not familiar with the place or do not know some one you may get rip you off. It also depends where you are going like, if the place has some class or if it is low end.

I went to this one place in Shenzhen in my newbie days... my mates and I were drunk already and it was around 3-4am. we just walked into some hole in the wall and they totally extorted us. 2000rmb for a few beers.
It was to the point where they locked us in the place, pretty much a stick up cause we felt the place was too low end and wanted to leave after a few minutes... but i think this is worst case senario.

As for pricing... depends what you drink. minimum coverage can be anywhere from 600rmb-well over 2000. Since you are only one person the smaller rooms should be under 1000. I only drink whiskey and a bottle is anywhere from 700-1500 rmb.

There are other expenses such as tips for waitress and of course your conversation and company for the night.
sometimes if you are Newbie ( in more extreme cases) they will throw in additional waitress or deliver food to your room with out you ordering. some of the ladies may order a bunch of misc. food, beverages and run up your bill. and when a bottle of water can cost 50rmb it can add up quickly.

some one else posted earlier with market prices... check it out, its about right.

and no, do not give MAMA san a tip.... she gets a cut from her ladies, usually mama san will not ask for tip if you know her.

MY ADVICE.... make friends with people who know where to go, then go with them, usually if you are friends with mama san or a manager they will hook up the fat discounts.

I only highlighted the negatives in my post. Again you may have a blast. I am assumming you are a newbie to the scene so wanted to give you a heads up..

who knows.. you could be a badass... playing solo could turn out to be a great night!

yours truly,

Lucian

Just wish I did not fall in love, cause now I have a serious romance issue and cannot wait to go to Nanjing to see this girl again. Any advice on this one?

...Hi, as a newbie to this forum and a newbie to China KTV. I got the same experience as yours.
I travelled China quite often and seen these KTVs long time already, but just recently tried with my Shanghainese colleages.
Subsequent to our KTV nightout, I had several email/sms exchanges with the KTV girl and had gone out for dinner and spent my last 3 consecutive days and nights in China with this girl in my hotel (free). To my surpise also, she pays for my taxi/subway/bus and some of our restaurant bills when we are together.
Before I left China, she invited me to go to her home town in Anhui to spend lunar new year (2009) there. With this kind of treatment I receive, I think I fell with this girl (24 yo) and will try to go back to Shanghai for no business reason at all in Jan'09.
I call her every night, even I know that she works in night hours at KTV, she always says she misses me (even shes sitting beside her customer)....
As you said, how I wish I did not fall in love, because I am in same situation as yours now.:(
Cheers!
Ey, any update from you and your romance with that "girl", its already Oct'08

You say you wish you did not fall in love… so I’m gonna rant…

dudes... while there is nothing wrong with falling in love... dont be giving your hearts away to just anyone... your story sounds so familiar.... its the same old song i've heard over and over... seem you guys just fell for the first girl to come along and treat you nice in a foreign land. Your story is a typical one of a newbie falling hard for a lovely KTV girl. If a girl likes you she suppose to treat you right… it’s the norm nothing to be surprised about.

“dont be a rest haven for hoes. “ haha had to throw that in there… but,

tell me friend, how long have you guys known each other.. to be flying back and forth for a relationship? Man that sounds like money and time wasted.

my advice friend is to lose the girl or chill out… explore more friend. Flying all the way here just to see her is a bit extreme...and calling anyone every night for that matter seems a bit needy to me. I mean you just met the girl. You said so yourself. You had just recently experienced KTV nightlife and to me this seems like the first girl you had a good connection with.

while what she does for you may be nice it is by no means special. And do you know what visiting the home town means out here… marriage. Too me she seems like a Newbie herself….You might have been the first cool guy or nice guy that came along in her early life... and she became attached to that idea. But the girls, especially in ktv, they will learn a lot quicker than you before you know it she’s met plenty of nice guys like you and leveled up in the game. Trust me friend this infatuation for her will disappear like a cheap magic trick if it was not built on anything solid.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of decent women working in ktv which would make good friends, girlfriends, wifey even…But I think in your case, from what I have read of your account its just newbie action in play. If you are into each other, no doubt, date her casually get to know who she is and what she is about it could turn out to be something nice. However don’t be saying you wish you did not fall in love….saying that makes me feel your doubt about your situation. Own it bro!

All i have to say is women are plentiful...freeking unlimited out here. Date more girls so you know exactly what you look for in your women.

Lucian is right...To ensure you don't get ripped off, or taken advantage of, it is best if you know the mamasan, or know someone who does. Its not what you know...its who you know.
If you go to a ktv you like, get a girls number, any girl, so if you ever want to go back, you can send her a message saying you want a room. She will get a commission, and you can negotiate an upfront discounted deal in advance. For room and booze. Obviously...The more in your group the better the discount. For sure...Even if you walk in off the street...Negotiate a deal with the mamasan up front.

The Fun of KTV is going with a group of friends...I highly recommend you go with successful Chinese Guys.... The Woman are fun loving and most of them sing really well and love to play drinking games.... It's 4 or 5 hours of drinking and laughs...If all you want is to wake up the next morning with a pretty lady, then check out Shanghai Craigslist, it will be much cheaper....

I recall staying at the Rendevouz on Yan An Xi Lu a while ago.The KTV is full of very beautiful girls.I actually just drank at the bar mucking aorund with the bar blokes and picking our fav lady.3 hours later all girls were pissed, stubling, giggling and up for it!

I just sat back and then as the rosta was moving ( girls coming and going )i began conversations.Lets say that I was beside myself with glee.Yet also wondering if they were not pissed, would they even bother coming over to chat and lay all over me..doubt it.

3 of them passed me thier numbers...we went out to clubbing the next weekend. They even paid for drinks...wow..

So try thier if it's still open.

But I also agree with other posts...go with mates both locals and westerns together is a great a laugh learning chinese songs, hiting high notes and wondering who the f choose the background video to match the song mood ?

Enjoy..... all KTV is an expeirence

My friend wants to have her birthday party at KTV tomorrow night, going to be around 20 people i think most of us are students and there will be few chinese people with us. Could somebody please tell me somewhere cheap to go with plenty of English songs? Last time I went to KTV with friends there were 15 of us and we paid around 50rmb each and whoever wanted beer bought it themselves so I am hoping for something similar this time. Also we need a big room but like I said we are all students and anything over 100 rmb each is not really worth the effort as we could just go out and get drunk for that much. Any idea's would be appreciated.

are u looking for a kalaOK (no girls) or a KTV (with girls)?

If you are looking for a KalaOK, then go to Party World at Fuxing Park. But with 20 people, you wont find any KalaOK when you have to spend more than 60-70/person

We are also looking for a place (American songs) for 19 people with no girls (we have 10 adults and 9 high school seniors) near the Jin An District for a few hours. Can the experts share the approximate location and the cost if possible. I have read about Party World, is that the only recommended one? Thanks again :-)!!!

Find a Haoledi near you, they're everywhere, and 'no girls'.
