Post here if you want to discuss all the things you can do for fun in Shanghai.

Postby kevkendall » Sat Jan 22, 2005 10:05 pm

Who do you think is the best rock band/live performance band in Shanghai. Who is the most controversial modern artist?

My friend from Canada is coming here in March to film a documentary for CBC about Shanghai Society and Culture.

I was hoping people on these forums could give me some of their opinions?

Thanks in advance people!

Just to throw out some names for the "good bands" part:

Cold Fairyland / Lengku Xianjing / 冷酷仙境
Marrow / Sui / 髓
Jing Gong Zhi Niao / 惊弓之鸟

These are all part of the rather smallish "scene" in Shanghai, not well known at all. But we like 'em!

DMC China presents "No Walls between Music 2004" --- The 1st CD compilation of Shanghainese modern musicians

(October 28th, 2004, Shanghai)

"No Walls between Music" ist the first CD compilation of DMC China (www.china-dmcworld.com), the chinese branch of the "Dance Music Community" created in 1983 in London. DMC was launched as a DJ ONLY record subscription club in February 1983, DMC is without doubt the founding company of DJ culture. Fuelled by a team of people with twenty years commitment to the music industry, DMC is manned by managers who either come from a DJ background or are passionate for music around the world.

"No Walls between Music" reflects DMC's basic idea that music can travel the world without any boundries.

DMC would like to create awareness to shanghainese, chinese and foreign music listeners about the growing modern music scene in Shanghai. These local artists are the new generation of young talented musicians who are living and creating modern music of the 21st centrury in their home town Shanghai, China. Their own music is a product of their chinese upbringing as well as the influence of the music from around the world. Since China opened up, music travels even faster then light. It is amazing how quickly these young talents found their way to express them selves in creating an enormous variety of music for their well beeing as well as for all the listeners. Their horizons widened and their creativity blossomed. All these musicians are live performers. Only a few had the opportunity to produce a CD, which ought to change soon. DMC is very proud to have found these musicians and has set its heart to support and encourage them for the future. Through the dedicated support of "No Walls between Music", DMC would like to share this unique artistic achievement with like-minded and discerning individuals, discovering this CD compilation through the free distribution of 10'000 CD's, in coopartion with high magazine.

"No Walls between Music" comprises the works of 11 musicians/bands of different backgrounds and music styles:
DUSTBOX (electro), POOM POOM (Hip Hop), JUNKYARD (Punk), COOL FAIRYLAND (alternative), THE LANTERNS (pop), JADE PARK (rock), ZOOMA (fusion jazz), PENG FEI (electro jazz), DJ TADI (electro), C.Y. (electro), FENG (jazz). More detailed information you will find enclosed and on the DMC China website. These tracks will be downloadable on the DMC website for the next 5 months for even a wider audience. This selection was made by DMC China after months of research and cooperation of the local music scene. After having received more then 25 demo tapes, DMC's hard work was to make a selection of the best in every field. DMC wanted to show the quality and variety of music to you and to the local people.

DMC is hoping that with this first community work you will appriciate and cherish the shanghainese musicians even more and that you too, will join us in encouraging the future generation in their creativity. Keep in mind, good music is just around the corner!
