Best Steak in Shanghai

Postby Handoogies » Mon Jun 14, 2010 2:06 pm

So far nothing close to Luger's or Wolfgang's in Shanghai. Roosevelt had potential, but medium rare porterhouse came with a cold center. Hamilton house has a fairly decent steak but portions are small. I hear Mortons is coming to Shanghai, should be good if quality is par with its HK counterpart.

Anyone have a memorable steak recently?

Moon's steak in Shanghai was bad. Bad cut of prime rib and they can't cook it right at all. I didn't care if they make nice sides because they ruined my steak. Maybe I should have tod them to make it again, but i got too used to the fact that in Shanghai they just never get it right so didn't bother with it.

Kabb's was ok. Decent cuts and cooked decently but nothing too fascinating.

Moon's steak was memorable, but not in a good way. In fact it was wierd that so little people were dining at Moon Steak. Should of known that was a bad sign of bad food! So much for that award sign saying it had the best steaks in Shanghai...... Disappointment!

Yeah, the joint at Honqiao Marriott is bloody awesome.

For me though, 55rmb for a huge Ribeye at City Supermarket in the Portman, on the BBQ, Salad on the side and some Eta Barbecue sauce i bought over from Aus is as good as it gets!

You sure 55rmb and not 155rmb? The qingdao bone-on ribeyes (1kilo, almost 2 inch thick) I get from Carefour are usually 260 - 280rmb, but will feed three people. I agree, best steak I've had in 4 years in Shanghai are the ones I make myself over a charcoal grill, rub the room temp meat with sea salt and black pepper, plop on and sear. Let internal temp reach 135F and take off and rest for five minutes. Medium rare perfection.

What do you mean am i sure it's 55rmb and not 155rmb? How friggin stupid do you think i am?

Yes, 55rmb, for a Qingdao Rib Eye and it's bloody amazing. It's about 350 or so grams. That, a salad, and a beer is enough for dinner for me.

The best steak I've had here was at a Hong Kong restaurant on Hong Mei Rd, surprisingly. Cost about 30 RMB for a plate of 4. Delicious. Tender. Melt in your mouth goodness. I'd certainly go back again.

For the money Yasmine's in Jinqiao on Biyun Lu is tops. Sometimes a little inconsistent but never bad just varies between good and great.

Starting from the assumption that I still have to find a steak like the ones you get in Italy or certain parts of the Americas (Texas, Argentina, Southern Brasil)...

...We are still quite lucky in Shanghai, as there's a good selection.

Monty's - http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/steakhouses/has/monty-s-steakhouse/

JW - http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/steakhouses/has/jws-california-grill1/

Latitude - [url]http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/french/has/bistro-latitude/

Latitude has actually an offer for a megasteak at RMB88, more info here > http://fb.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai

I cant comment on Monty's or Latitude but JW is garbage. Over the years Ive had several unfortunate meals there.
The last was about 1 month ago: Seafood tower with rotten mushy crab legs, over-cooked limp white asparagus appetizer, cold-raw Wagyu steak (my guest ordered medium-rare) replaced by a well-done hockey puck. A meal there is rarely under 1000 RMB per person if you're drinking wine.
Avoid at all costs.

I'm not saying its the best (as far as I'm concerned there is no great beef in SH) but I was at Pinnacle Peak a couple of weeks ago for their Wednesday night all you can eat steak and ribs for 125rmb (+ ladies drink free) and it was surprisingly good, much better than the first time I ate there. Damn good deal tonight if you're hungry. http://www.smartshanghai.com/venue/3975 ... k_shanghai

All you missed out. Imported delicious Tazmanian beef, all I could eat for 125rmb. I had 4 steaks, a burger and a dozen ribs. Pinnacle Peak was empty, Shanghai makes no sense. Plus girls could have drank free and it was ghost.

Those steaks have excellent marbling, can u divulge your source? I've been using a meat thermometer of late, take them off the grill as soon as it hits 125F internal, it will continue to residual cook to 130F, always perfectly medium rare 8)

Yup, it's a 119 RMB lunch set menu (and it includes a soup or salad plus fruit plate). That same deal is available all day on Mondays and Tuesdays. They use imported steak so it's definitely an excellent deal - it made a City Weekend list a while back for best value as well.

Décor's on the kitchier side though so it's not as good if you're looking for a steakhouse for formal business dinners. (See it and book it here: http://www.diningsecretary.com/shanghai/restaurant-d/AESH10015489.shtml). They do have a mechanical bull and a bar though...

Just got back from City shop, and bought 2 Qingdao Rib Eyes for under RMB 30 each. About 265 grams.
Pretty damn good value. Taste test tonight.
Actually they seem to have upgraded their meats at Portman shop, and maybe brought prices back a little.
Saw a Aussie beef rolled roast there, string and all, about 1 kg. I think it was just over RMB 100.
By the time I got back 5 minutes later it had gone. Damn!

What is the address of Qingdao Rib Eye you mentioned? Sounds good to me..

Hi Mate. I'll answer, in case Mat doesn't see.
We got from City shop, underground on the escalator, just inside the Shanghai Centre. 1376 Nanjing rd West.
For you, 2 stops on Metro # 2, to JingAn temple then walk 10 minutes towards east to the centre.

Although some grizzle about the City shop prices, there are some things that are very well priced there.
I always buy my fav. cheeze there, (Aussie Bega tasty @ 31) Best price in town.
You can get Aussie imported Rib eye steaks for about 100. Not bad.
One thing about City, their meats are decent quality, whether local or imported.

Must admit, I have bought a beef roast or two from our local Tesco, that could not be eaten. Even our 2 doggies did not like.

Usually I get beef roasts from Metro (supermarket) pretty good.

By the way, our 2 Qingdao Rib Eyes tonight from City were good.

John.
