Dvd's are a pain, I prefer the download method. Media players are great for decoding .mkv, avi. .flac for music, etc. Sony has released a new player the SMP N100 that has a great menu and will play up to 1080P through HDMI. I have not found a format that it will not convert yet. Just downloaded The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, 13GB file quality is amazing. I don't have any experience with the Popcorn players etc. but I am sure they are just as good possibly better, but that is a move in the right direction, no more scratched dvd's.

I use a VPN to get much faster download speeds, Seattle is the best location for me to use as a server. Here are some sites I like to use
for tv shows http://www.ezrss.it
for movies http://btjunkie.org/
also http://take.fm/
I have had reliable downloads that were virus free, most tv shows appear within 1 day of being shown in Canada or the States on Ezrss.it

You got better download speeds via VPN ?
How does this work?
Have the feeling that VPN connections are slower than regular chinese.
Only use Witopia VPN for Access to Youtube, Facebook and so on.
Otherwise download via Utorrent but the speed is crap.

Actually my small DVD shop on Xinzha Lu near Taixing lu has a good amount of Blue rays for 30 rmb.

Not the crappy encoded avc copies, but real rips from the orig. BluRay including full dtsMA or DolbyTruHD tracks.

I usually wait for the official Bluray to be released before buying the copy here, so you get the propper rips. Had a only 2 downcoded copies I got there , and the guy just took them back.

Other than that you can order them directly from HK through HMV.com.hk . Not sure about the BluRays , but they deliver the games to china , so you can give it a try.

^ I've been buying "real Blu-Rays" and I'm sure they are exactly that. However the signal is obviously compressed, so I think they are simply burning a less-than-true-HD signal to Blu-Ray format.

The soundtracks are usually incredible though.

Not sure how they can get the soundtracks so easily but struggle to deliver true HD visuals.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

i get my burned blurays from 'reputable' sellers on taobao (relative term) and they're always 1080p/24 and HD audio tracks.

Hi there. We will be moving to Shanghai this summer. Is it possible to purchase region-free blu-ray dvd players. Can you buy 55" Sony TVs? Sorry for the ignorance, all new to me. Thanks!

Haven't seen many region free blu-ray players in the market...even those that would unlock the dvd players for me before (Gome, Suning) have all said their blu-ray players would only play China region discs.

I think Gome and Suning sells 55" Sony LEDs...I've seen the large Sharp TVs at Suning (60 or 70", forget which), and I had recently bought a 55" Samsung LED from Suning.
