Booking Train Tickets to Huang Shan

Postby RT1 » Tue Jan 08, 2008 12:12 pm

Does anyone know any websites or hotlines I could call to get some train fares? I am thinking of going to Huang Shan or Wulingyuan. Any accomodation tips, costs, etc would also be welcome. Thanks.

Huangshan is an amazing trip. There's lots of stuff to see in the surrounding countryside, wild monkeys, waterfalls and stuff like that. Very worthwhile. I don't know how long you're gonna stay for, but I'd suggest seeing all the surrounding area first, then hiking/take the cable car up, and do some exploring. Spend the night on the mountain, there's a few hotels. They're not too badly priced, but I'm not sure if you can book them online. Spend the next day exploring huangshan, then head on down. Get a foot massage right away. There was a guy who helped us out when we went, spoke really good english, prided himself on not screwing over visitors and helped them every way he could. He has a small restaurant and sells bus tickets. I'll try and find his business card if I can.

With the new expressway the bus trip from Huangshan is only 5-6 hours compared to 12 or so on the train.

Where do you buy tickets for this bus and board the bus? Can you buy 2 ways or just one way? Cost?

I only bought a ticket one way from Huangshan to Shanghai. I bought it from Mr Hu who BJandMegs recommends above. It was just over 100 RMB if I remember correctly. It dropped off at the bus station outside the South Railway Station so I assume the bus boards there.

Won't it be freezing on the mountain? I was there in April and even then it was really chilly in the morning. Plan on long underwear plus.

You can book the hotel online - Ctrip or Elong. I think we paid about 800rmb for a room -- in our case the room was awful (had just rained and plumbing was flooded, the stench was overpowering) and the food expensive and mediocre. There was a terrible line for the cable car -- 3 hours plus -- and I can't imagine a worse time to go than Spring Festival unless you have a very high tolerance for being overpacked in amongst a lot of Chinese tourists.

Plus the mountain is multiple hours of climbing up or down concrete steps. Even if you are already in pretty good shape, plan on several days of extreme stiffness. One of my friends could barely walk the first two days after we came down.

If you speak Chinese, skip Mr Hu. He's nice enough, and doesn't gouge you, but he takes a little extra on everything. Fine if you need the service, but if you can speak reasonably well, you can get by without him. Even if you don't contact him, he'll probably magically appear when you arrive. I think he has a monopoly on foreigners.

We flew back -- took a taxi to the town, about an hour away (forget the name now) they have a historic district, similar to Yuyuan except cheaper, ate and shopped a bit, then went to the airport.

I have planed the trip for a long time, but not relized by now .
As I know ,it takes about 5-6 hours from shanghai to tunxi ( one of the major towns of huangshan ) ,the ticket shoud be about RMB100 . As for the train , A) 2182/2183 fm Shanghai to Yingtan ,but there's a stop at Huangshan ,ETD 12:40 and ETA 00:27 ,price range from RMB 46-99-162 B) N418/419 fm Shanghai to huangshan ,ETD 22:35 and ETA 10:00 ,price RMB96-169-264 .
Some other expense, ticket for huangshan is RMB110 ,ropeway is RMB55/one way ,hotel on mountain is RMB 480 /double room now ,but in the spring festival ,
the price should be about RMB 780-960/doule room I guess .
Of course, huangshan in all the seasons is beautiful ,and for winter ,u could see the mountain in snow and beautiful sunshine ,good trip . But I have to say ,it's not a good idea to go there in the spring festival, u have to spend more money and find less view because there are so many people stand ,climd ,take photos ...around you! Good luck!
