Botox Black Market in Shanghai?

Postby lydd11 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:37 am

Hi all, was wondering if any one of you knows about the black market (like who, what, where and how they operate, how much a procedure would cost ) for unlicensed clinics giving cosmetics injections like Botox, Collagen, Restylane in Shanghai? greatly appreciate your sharing--personal or friend's experience. Many thanks!

I've heard a lot of it goes on in beauty salons and hairdressers. Also double-eyelid surgery being done in dingy back rooms.

If you have a "Botox" treatment at almost any clinic in China, licenced or not, they will actually be using "Chinatox", which is from a laboratory in Lanzhou. It's actually not a bad product, SFDA registered, but it's not Botox.

In matter of fact, the Chinese name for this product is 肉毒素 (rou du su, literal translation "muscle toxin"). So there's no subterfuge unless you ask for the brand name, which very few Chinese people do.

I doubt I would go to a medical professional for a haircut, so why would you
allow ANY of the beauticians to inject you with a potential neurotoxin.. the logic
escapes me when there are so many licensed medical professionals here.
And by and large their fees are reasonable.

Well, I think the salons and hairdressers are using local doctors.

In China, doctors (with rare exceptions) are only licensed to work in one place (usually a hospital). Moonlighting is illegal, but that regulation is observed mainly "in the breach". And once again, guanxi rules.

Actually the local Shanghai health department has really tightened up their monitoring of the supply chain for registered drugs. It used to be possible to buy all sorts of stuff in drug stores here. Those days are mostly over.

The situation is actually much worse in the West, where nurses and dentists regularly hold "Botox parties" (what a ridiculous concept). Attendees are plied with champagne and then injected. I struggle to enumerate the ethical principles violated by that set-up. Where does the supply come from? Why, compliant GPs who are getting a small slice of the action...

Let me take the Milton Friedman position . . .

Let anyone inject botox. Why not? Caveat emptor. If a botox injector screws up enough times, everyone will know. If someone dies as a result of a botched botox injection, it's their own fault. They should have done their homework before going to that back alley botoxionist.

Hi tihZ_hO, hahha chill! Im not going under the knife, just wanted to know how much the cosmetic surgery blackmarket is in China since there's so much hearsay about it before I arrive and I was amazed that botox is actually on sale on taobao.com and people buy to inject themselves! It is beyond my imagination and such stuff like this would be impossible from where I come from. Thanks for the lucid warning tho and thanks all for the contribution! :) yup and I totally agree to seek proper and professional channel as always.

There are many "black" labs in China manufacturing all sorts of drugs. Botulinum toxin would be tricky but not impossible to manufacture, especially if you hired one of the techs away from one of the "legit" Chinese labs. But it would be fraught with all sorts of difficulties.

What's more likely is that the Taobao suppliers are either touting a completely fake product with no active ingredient, or getting some legit Chinese product which "fell off the back of a truck". I wonder which it is.

Either way, you'd be freakin' insane to try it.

I have a friend who's a model for a plastic surgery marketing agency. They market for a number of clinics including alot of South Korean Clinics. All the model's they hire ARE NOT previous clients of the clinics. They are just girls that have faces that fit the ideal face that the cosmetic clinics try to sell. Teardrop chin, small face, slim body, nice eyes decked out by a make up and hair team before the show starts.

The clinic pays the agency per head so they really sell you a fancy show at the surgery conferences. If your going to get cosmetic surgery just make sure that you pick your clinic with caution and take everything you hear with a grain of salt. The people i've met in that industry are some of the best showmen i've ever met.
