Brasa VS Commando

Postby dragond69 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 10:59 am

After reading all the arguments on both Chicken places I thought I would have some fun and go to both locations on the same night order a 1/4 chicken meal at both places and compare. Price wise and location size were both very close so had to go compare quality. Here is what I found.

I first went to commando. I walked into the store and there was a nice polite young lady there to greet me. As I speak fluent Chinese I can't say how good her English was though. As for the meal, first came the salad which was fresh at topped with an oil based herb dressing. Then came the meal. I had the chicken with potato wedges. It came on a aluminum baking dish with plastic cutlery. One taste told me that the chicken and potato was cooked earlier and then reheated in the oven. The result was bland dry chicken. Green sauce was also nothing to write home about. After talking to the girl at the front desk confirmed that the chicken was cooked in the AM and then oven re-heated. Also looking into the kitchen, I do wonder about sanitary conditions.

Off to the second stop. Brasa. To be honest this one was hard to find in the residential complex. Ordered the 1/4 meal with garlic rice as this was talked about a lot in threads. Again. a fresh salad. Chicken wise, much better and more juicy. Again though there was something a little off because the chicken was a little cool. As they were preparing my meal I could hear the microwave go off in the kitchen and I guess my meal was nuked. The lady at the counter confirmed that the chicken was cooked at about 4 and I had it at 630 so it was still juicy but not hot. The garlic rice was slightly undercooked but very flavorful. Then I saw the rice in the kitchen and other prepared dishes in a plastic container with no cover. A big health hazard. Then I was told that many products are brought from a central kitchen and then prepared on premise. When asked why the chicken was not freshly made and hot the answer was that it was hard to control how many chickens are sold in a day. As for the three sauces, the green sauce was good, the other two were average,

Overall conclusion, both places have a long way to go to be good rotisserie chicken stores. Brasa wins this challenge only because they cooked their chicken two hours before I ate it. If I was to compare which was a hot meal, commando would be a hot meal but that is only because they re-heated my meal in the oven. As well, on an end note the assortment of chicken products that are made are as confirmed by the young ladies working on premise are made with leftover rotisserie chicken so remember that before you order. Also, one day, I hope the word consistency becomes a part of the business in Shanghai restaurants.

This is just my point of view from trying both locations within 30 min of each other on last Friday.

How do the above two compare to the 38 kuai whole chickens at City Shop? That's where I usually go...

KFC if basically a heart attack in a bucket..... I think city shop is better personally but chickens might be smaller. Price wise though 1/4 chicken meal was about the same price you would pay for a whole chicken at city shop. So I would go to city shop. Only disadvantage is that many people are looking for delivery which city shop does not offer.

Hard to cook roast chicken by waiting until after you order it. It's always going to be cooked before you got there.

The only way to time it to get it fresh is know the cooking time table of the location....

But one location cooks it in the morning and heats it up in the oven when you order... the other two-three hours before you order and you get it warm....... remember also if you get it delivered you have to add delivery time... if you want to pay what these two places are charging for what you get then go ahead...

F'em both! Who cares? You're all suckers! Gheezus. Bunch of desperate wankers we are, arguing over mediocre, microwaved chicken.

After a few weeks in business these guys should have a reasonable idea of the ebb and flow of chicken carcasses ....

In an ideal world, yes. But aren't we talking about a "celebrity" chef here?

"I am a professional cook"!
