I've been playing Skyrim and got into a situation where I couldn't progress as my quests were all glitched and the new patch 1.4 from Bethesda was just released.

So I logged onto Live and downloaded the updates. It updated the Dashboard and I hope Skyrim.

But when I started to play again about 30 seconds in the message popped on screen " Cannot not authorize disk" ( something like that). The machine rebooted and I tried again with the same result. I didn't try any other disks.

So tomorrow I'll go the he local gameshop and show the guy a screenshot of the message.

Anyone know if the latest Xbox - MS updates have any issues in them?

And YES, I am using a local copy of the game...

All new updates rewrite DVD drive firmware and ban consoles even in offline.

After so much trouble doing this stuff back in the days, going legit is the best way to go. No problems at all.

Oh, my mistake I thought you'd destroyed your xbox to stop a habit.

Got to hate it when games use to work but then took an arrow to the knee.

For future reference. Avoid updating games that you aren't sure are the real thing and always wait just in case the update is flawed. PCs are the way to go for quality and ease of use for games that could be pirated. Can't you just uninstall and then reinstall on a Xbox.

I stuck in another relatively new game - Space Marine and it played so the Box isn't totally bricked - maybe just Skyrim.

the issue is Skyrim - while a GREAT game - has many bugs and I came to a point where the main quests couldn't proceed and the 1.4 patch fixed the error. So I knew I was taking a risk by downloading it... And also got a new Dashboard look.

So today I'll ask the game store geek if he has the newest update...

I need a break from Skyrim as I have been playing it for endless weeks in lieu of going on an actual vacation.

So my Xbox took an arrow to the dvd drive...

for some games I agree - like BF3 played on Live is better than sex ( these days anyways...) but for Skyrim with no online advantages paying .75 cents is ok.

And while a pc has advantages I still like the idea of kicking back on the couch with a wireless controller.

Kicking back on the couch with a wireless keyboard and mouse is always an option. My TV is my second monitor.

Took it to a game shop today and he hooked it up and once he saw the new Dashboard he said " No fix for it yet" "No play copy game, only original..."

I bought 5 new games just before Xmas (Rage,Gears of War 3, Arkham Asylum, Resident Survivor 5, Medal of Call of Honour something) and all 5 wouldnt play. Screen said "Xbox needs to be updated, Press X to update" I did so and it kept getting stuck on 99%. Took it back to the shop where bought in Bejing Lu and they stuck a hard drive in and updated it. Took 5 mins and all working and all sexy again now

Actually tonight I watched Dexter during dinner and now am going to read a book about Commercial Inventory Management...

If you update your dashboard regularly, (it's like windows 8 now btw), then you have to continually update your DVD drive. Every 3 or 4 updates rewrites the DVD firmware to factory settings which requires probing the drive for key retrieval (unless you save a copy like me). Anyway, only the red ring of death is a truly bricked machine. I have also had to wait 6 to 8 weeks for new hackware to be developed for new dashboards, but since the last time, I've just stopped going on live.

Best advice: When a new dashboard update is released, don't install it. Copy down the version number, head to your local shop and ask them if the have the new hack update for that version and for your DVD drive and Xbox model (slim or phat). If not, wait on the updating. FYI, these days the slims are getting the new hacks before the phats.

I got a fatty. Maybe I need to buy a new Box. Damn a friend just came from the US and I should have asked them to buy me a $199 machine from Walmart.

I got to find who's coming from home and ask them to get me one (maybe)

^^I wouldn't bother buying a slim. New Gen Xbox's and Play Station's will probably hit the shelves in the next 12 - 18 months.

Get a VPN and hop on YouTube. There are tons of tutorials on how to unbrick it.

I am truly, truly sorry. That sucks.

I have a friend back in Florida that does Xbox modding as a hobby / moneymaker and he's helping me though this mid-life crisis. I'll get it fixed.
