There's no reason for any book store to carry English IT books. too specialised and for a very small minority of customers with that specialty anyway.
Amazon is the easiest and cheapest way to do it. Some of the english bookshop might import them for you but Amazon's book list is the best. Over the pass couple years I've bought over 20 IT related books from them and not a problem in delivery or with customs.

you are dead wrong. English IT books (the classic books, not the latest .net/web 2.0/photoshop crap) can be found in almost all major book stores.

I've yet to find any English books in the "major book stores" let alone any relating to IT.

Might try Charterhouse bookstore in the basement of the Shanghai Times Square building. It's an all English bookstore. Don't know the selection, but I would be shocked if they didn't have at least some books related to IT.

Ever heard of www.Amazon.com ? That's where I got most of my software books and CDs with great source code examples that I used and tweaked to suit client requirements. Why re-invent the wheel ?

Takes maybe 5 days to China.

you just need to be more careful. there are at least 100-200 different English IT books there in the book city. they usually carry a Chinese translated title, a slightly different cover, but the content is in English, completely same including the page to page layout to its original english version. they all all legally published English books, licensed from those most respectful publishers.

there are a few on my desk now that I bought in Shanghai several years ago, for example

Thinking in C++
Raymond's The Art of Unix Programming
TCP/IP Illustrated

the advantage? I paid 7 US dollars for that Thinking in C++ book.

don't be cheated by its Chinese title, you need to be careful.

the content is in english, the layout is 100% same to its original version.

this is NOT some cheap illegally copied version, they are all licensed copies.

I shudder at C++, stuck with VB6, Crystal Reports & ODBC connected to Oracle.

Domestic Violence Offender Database, Police Service , West Australian Government,
Magistrates Courts and Supreme Court.

Pre-Adoption Database, Family & Childrens' Services - West Australian Government,
Y2K remediation.

Asset Management, Fremantle Port Authority, West Australian Government. 2 million items, SQL Server.

Operating Theatre Management and scheduling in Public Hospitals, West Australian Government.

All done in Vb6.

Yep, I'm older, but wiser.

You do C++ ? I admire you.

Why am I in China ? Why did I leave an exemplexorary career ? I Don't know some days. Your turn.

My previous work helped thousands of people, people I will never know. And people I might despise.

Okay but maybe not so dead wrong. I haven't needed a classic C++ Primer since I bought mine back in University. I assumed that the OP was looking for modern IT books

The first commercial software I worked on is sitting inside some telephone exchange in columbia (and maybe Chicago) ticking over every now and then but without it a few thousand columbians won't be able to make a mobile call :D

Of course these days I've sold out and gone for the software that I know people will see and use. :D

Yes you can find some but those are not the latest. If you travel to Hong Kong sometime you can check the Mongkok computer center, you will find anything that you might be looking for. And of course you also can go the Amazon option.

A LOT of books are available in electronic format these days. A number of books that Amazon sells are also available for download from the site. If you see a book on there that isn't available for download, go to the publisher's website. Major English language business book publishers like Wiley & Sons have many of their books in electronic format.

from memory, I don't think there are many "modern" IT books there that worth my time.

of course coding monkeys (not saying anyone here is a coding monkey) could argue their .net/java or even "cloud computing" books are "modern".
