Buying a dog

Where can I buy a dog besides markets? Are there any websites I can look at?
Thanks

YOu may adopt a dog - there's a charity organising pet adopting days (not sure if this is the right expression) once a month at O'Malleys.

yes, I was about to say, before you actually go BUY a pet, please consider adopting one from SCAA, Second Chance Animal Aid, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping animals that have been abandoned, injured or abused. Please check out their website at www.scaashanghai.org/

Also, please try and learn about how poorly dogs are often bred here before buying any dog. Some of teh conditions are frightfully disgusting.

Agree with the above, better to adopt through SCAA than fill the pockets of some of the other *** out there...

Please dont buy a pet! Adopt them!

As mentioned above the SCAA is a great organization to rescue and foster animals. For a small donation you can get a pet that has rescued and has a documented record with the best vets in town (PAWs).

Plus adoption days at SCAA are pretty nice . Next one will happen this Sunday 19th on O'Malleys. More details at the scaa website (http://www.scaashanghai.org). Great place to make friends.

I adopted two out of my four cats there, great animals!

Please also make sure that you are able to bring your pet home with you when/if you leave Shanghai or that you are 110% sure you can find a good home for him/her. It breaks my heart when people are irresponcible and decide they want a pet but then life takes them elsewhere and the pet is left behind.

SCAA is a wonderful organization. I wouldn't buy a pet (although my current pet was purchased, it was the only option at the time, but all previous babylets have been adopted) when there are so many animals in need of a loving home.

Please don't support those dog-sellers on the streets. While I hate to say this because it means turning your back on an animal in need, many of them are not healthy and it only encourages the sellers to continue with the practice.

re-ignite this old thread, as I was thinking of getting a dog, but decided against it after noticing the 6 month quarantine period in the UK - £2,500 minimum. Could look after him/her fine in China no problem, but if I ever had to leave China, not sure I'd want him/her quarantined for a whole 6 months, though money isnt the issue.

Does anyone know....if you have a Chinese pet quarantined in the UK for 6 months which then returns to China, does that same pet have to be quarantined for 6 months yet again upon coming back to the UK?

The answer to your question is yes. As long as the animal was in China before, it needs to be quarantined before heading back into the UK. If you are interested in fostering a dog maybe we can offer you that. My husband and I run J.A.R (Jaiya's Animal Rescue) and we rescue homeless and abandoned animals off of the streets of Shanghai. Right now we have a surplus of dogs but are running low on foster parents. Perhaps you might be interested in that alternative. If you are please email us at shanghaidogs@gmail.com and please feel free to have a look at our website at these links.....

Hi Jolynne,

what you do in honour of your daughter is sensational. WELL DONE!!

I'm a big supporter of SCAA and we (JustBeer) would love to be involved in any events you are doing by offering raffle prizes, beer for events, whatever. All you have to do is ask and i assure you it will be done.

Well done again.

your microsite is really interesting, and some of the stories heartbreaking, but the get-togethers look great. I have been reading it for the past 3 hours or so........I am shocked to hear about the Cloud 9 incident. But I will see what I can do about adoption.

I live in a fairly large apartment on two floors (2nd anf 3rd floors) - too much space for me, and I work from home, and there's a park adjacent to the block. It's in a two floor old lane house. As mentioned, if I was ever forced to leave China the cost of taking a pet with me wouldn't be an issue, neither would space be as I have a big place in a semi-rural part of England. It's just the 6 month quarantine period that worries me a little - could the quarantine significantly affect a pet's behaviour? Are owners able to visit the pet during quarantine or is it no-visitors-allowed?

Yes you can visit the animal in quarantine. My husband and I were going to take our 3 dogs back to England three years ago and we checked into all of these things. We also have a friend who brought her dog back with her about a year ago and she was able to visit him. As for quarantine affecting a pets behaviour, I think that is something you could discuss with any one of the foreign vets in Shanghai for a professional opinion. Dr James Holder from PAWS or Dr Stephanie from St Anthony's Animal Recovery Hospital are two that I would recommend. My friends dog was fine when he came out, I think it depends on the dog and their temperment beforehand. I have three dogs and two I know for sure could handle quarantine but the other one wouldn't do very well.....hope this helps and we hope to hear from you soon!!

Hello again! Glad to hear George is doing so well, we saw the adoptive family online and knew he was in good hands. We saw so much potential in that dirty little scruff of a puppy, and he's certainly come a long way. How's Ruby doing? We miss her very much. For ages we kept looking over our shoulder while out on our bikes, half expecting to see her running after us!

By the way we've been meaning to make a little donation... how do we go about doing that?
