Cant connect to my SMTP server. Help.

I contacted my hosting sp in the US and they said...

Please provide to the ISP provider "ChinaNet Shanghai Province Network" and ask about alternative way for you, because 25 port blocked from your end.

I can still get incoming from both my pop and imap server (for now), but I can no longer connect to my smtp server. Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?

Does your host allow using SMTP through another port (26 is usually an option)?

Or use your ISP their SMTP. Problem is Chinese IP SMTP's are usually in many spam blacklists so half of your emails will never arrive..

Yeah, I won't suggest using local SMTPs (although this solves the speed issue) unless all the recipients are local.

Thanks for your responses.

Yea, I asked for an alternative port and they said no, we only use port 25. The host is ixweb hosting.

I do not want to use a local SMTP as most of my clients are foreigners and we don't want to end up in their spam boxes.

The only alternatives I can think of now are to connect through a VPN or proxy to the US. What a headache!

Any other ideas?

Change email hoster
I could recommend Pair.com which offers alternative port 2525

$6/month, 200 mailboxes

my individual gmail account is already passed 1 GB so that $6 option doesnt really work. We dont need 200 email address. We are less than 20. but oviously each person needs several GB of space to work with.

Why keep emails on server ? Keep it on every persons computer, that means delete after download...

China doesn't block any outgoing ports.
They do block specific sites though.

Did it work previously, and now doesn't?

If thats the case, probably just congestion between you and there.
If you use an oversea's provider, you'll get that a lot, whether its in Hong Kong or USA.

Having local email doesn't mean you will be placed in spam lists.
I run a bunch of local email servers, and despite my clients best efforts, I've kept us out of the major lists ;)

Can you connect to the remote server?

Assuming Windows

Start/Run/CMD
telnet youremailservernamegoeshere 25
ehlo me

Does that display anything?
