I'm looking for a Chinese cookbook in English that I can use here in Shanghai. That is, ingredients are what you would find at a wet market. Lot's of pictures and even pinyin alongside the English would be nice. Then I could take the book to the market and point to what I wanted.

Anybody know of something like this?

I have one book which I find very helpful.
It's called "A Cook's guide to Chinese Vegetables" by Martha Dahlen, Wokman Press

There are described different kinds of Chinese veggies, spices etc. with large picture of every vegetable and the name in Chinese and pinyin.
For each there is described western and chinese cooking method.

My husband just brought one back from Hong Kong, was written by Paul Ho. The thing is from the cover it looks like a chinese-only book, you wouldn't know that it had the English recipes inside until you open it up and look. I think it was probably written for all the Phillipina maids in HK who can't read Chinese.

Oh my, now I have amazon envy. I have been looking up these books and finding links to others but where to buy in Shanghai???

I have several Chinese cookbooks which I found at the Foreign Language Bookstore (Shanghai Book Traders) on Fuzhou Lu near Shanxi Lu. The best one is Chinese Home-Style Cooking by Wang Jinhuai ISBN 7-119-00407-7

All English which makes it hard to know the dishe's actual name but very useful and lots or regional specialities.
