We have a some locals show up. We want to make it clear that its NOT an english corner and its NOT a place for locals to practice their english. Its also NOT for selling your goods and services. If you can engage in conversation and make some friends, thats great. If a local sits there like a bump on a log and is scared to even open his mouth.. its rips off the energy of the group. So its not whether locals can come, its whether anyone who comes can participate.

Wow...that sounds you have some bad experience before.
Anyway I totally understand what you trying to say even though it doesn't seem friendly.

Sorry for the attitude. Yes, we have had some experiences before. It is really important to be clear about the nature of the event, because it can get out of control very easily if we do not. We have had foreign english teachers invite their whole local english language class to our "english corner" - so its not about keeping locals out..its about maintaining the quality of the meeting so that new expats have a place to meet people and get to know more about living in Shanghai. We have been severely criticized for having coffee meetings at which no foreigners were apparently present. So we are just being clear. Last week, there was a nice mix of expats and local and everyone appeared to have fun and good discussion. This is what we want.

I subscribe weekly newsletter from Shanghai expat. Thinking this would be a good place to know some new friends and probably you guys need some kind of help or fresh information. That is all I come for.
