Contemplating on the move to Shanghai

Postby wthou » Sat Feb 04, 2012 1:59 pm

Hi all, I am new to this forum.... Bumped into it while 'googling' for information in regards to the topic. Firstly, please allow me to briefly pen my background. I was orginally from Malaysia but I have been living and working in Australia for the last 4 years. My background is Sales in the FMCG industry. I have been attached to large multinationals for the last 18 years.

I have been thinking about looking for a job in Shanghai for a while and there are a couple of issues that may be a potential hindrance for the move. One of them is the kid's education.

I have 2 children, aged 8 and 3 years. The first kid is currently attending school in Australia. If I ever successfully secured a job in Shanghai, it will be on my own effort and I will not NOT be getting packages that foreign expats enjoy. i.e. I will need to sort out education for my 1st kid. International schools are out of the question as they usually charge exorbitant fees. We are thinking about home schooling but my wife is not qualified to teach. I am wondering if there is any home schooling 'tuition centres' in Shanghai with kids being taught by a professional tutor, at a fraction of the cost charged by those international schools?? If not, please could someone who has walked this path provide me with some insights in overcoming this issue.

As for my second kid, I could explore placing her in a local school when the time comes.

Cheers!

Welcome, there are many Malaysians in SH, they are a great bunch, hardworking and unassumingly, I like them lots.

While I am not sure what industry you work in from the acronyms, I know many are employed in the IT, Engineering field here.

There is no home school tuition centre here, that option is totally out.

International schools, upward 150,000RMB and above per annum.

Purely local school, you will probably faint and not find it to your liking.

International division of a local school whereby they offer good value and is more vigorous like in SG or MY is another option. You would be looking at probably 80,000-90,000RMB per annum

Do your research properly....

Have you considered SG?

Hello wthou, please feel free to come and put your questions to our members over at http://www.shanghaimamas.org. (It's not just mamas - we have papas too :-) ) Absolutely you can get good info here at ShanghaiExpat as well, but for family stuff you might find it easier to connect directly with other parents specifically. We have many parents who are not here on big flashy packages who will be happy to give you some input as to what options you have for local-with-international-stream schooling. (There are some homeschooling groups in Shanghai you can join too, but these tend to be a bit Jesus-y. Which is fine if that's your thing, but not so great if it isn't.) We've got loads of Malaysian and Australian parents as part of our membership so you can get some perspective from those who are most likely to understand where you are coming from - literally and figuratively!
Cack, my blog is buggered.

Drsubaru : SG is not in my option. Went I tendered my resignation approx 4 years back, the reason I gave was migrating to Australia. My GM had offered me a role in SG but I turned it down. No offence to any Singaporeans over here but I do not find SG to my liking.

Please can you elaborate what is wrong with the local schools?? Thanks.
