Shanghai awaits Beckham's Galaxy
30 Jan 2008
(Shanghai Daily) David Beckham is coming. But fans may have reasons to grudge as the former England captain may play just one half of the game to avoid "injuries ahead of the MLS season."
Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy will line-up against China's Division One team East Asia at Shanghai Stadium on March 5.
The Major League Soccer outfit, with its newly appointed coach Ruud Gullit, is touring Asia ahead of its season opener in March end.
But Galaxy assistant general manager Tom Payne played down the Beckham factor, saying the team will play safe with its most expensive player, who moved from Spanish champion Real Madrid to the US last year, in what was seen as a major coup for Galaxy.
East Asia will be led by head coach Xu Genbao, who said it was a dream for his young side - most of them are less than 20 years of age - to play some of the stars of the game.
It is likely that Galaxy may play one more game in China before it heads to South Korea.
