Can anyone give me a bit of a rundown of places to see some decent live rock music in Shanghai? Seems like there isn't too much of a rock scene here but there must be something going on - even decent rocky blues stuff?

I'd REALLY appreciate some good details on how to find the places too since I'm a complete newb here and don't know the roads etc very well.

The Malone's band is better than you would expect. Seriously. They don't recycle the same old songs played at every other bar in town. It is located at 255 Tong Ren Road, near Nanjing Xi Road.

Tang Hui has also had some decent bands. Believe that they closed the current location and are going to be opening a new one late this month or early next month. Keep an eye on English magazines for the address.

The Malone's band definitely lived up to my expecations: typical Filipino cover band pop-schlock with a few classic rock songs thrown in to keep the fat old white men happy. I don't mind stopping by there for a burger once in a while, but I can't imagine anyone going there just for the music.

I saw Zhuma last week and asked him about Tang Hui's new location. He said, "Wait til the end of the year, then we'll see." Not too promising.

Right now there are only a few places to go for live rock:
<b>Live Bar</b> is leading the pack, with underground bands every weekend.
<b>Ark</b> in Xintiandi averages one rock show a month.
<b>Bar 288</b> (aka Melting Pot) has regular folk shows and Monday night jam sessions. Not much rock, but they may do more in the future.
