The Malone's band definitely lived up to my expecations: typical Filipino cover band pop-schlock with a few classic rock songs thrown in to keep the fat old white men happy. I don't mind stopping by there for a burger once in a while, but I can't imagine anyone going there just for the music.
I saw Zhuma last week and asked him about Tang Hui's new location. He said, "Wait til the end of the year, then we'll see." Not too promising.
Right now there are only a few places to go for live rock:

Live Bar is leading the pack, with underground bands every weekend.
Ark in Xintiandi averages one rock show a month.
Bar 288 (aka Melting Pot) has regular folk shows and Monday night jam sessions. Not much rock, but they may do more in the future.
msittig does a good job of keeping
upcoming.org updated, and there's a calendar on
Shanghai Streets as well.
