I don't think it matters who is going to be the next president. All more of the same

Every war-time US President served two terms (to my memory). You could most definitely say we are in an period of war/conflict: A war on terrorist organizations that carries on (despite less media coverage), a war within the government between two divided parties, a cold war of sorts with the rest of the world with the economy/debt situation.

Obama will be reelected. The Republicans simply have nobody presentable.

that might be true but the question was not whether he will be re-elected, but
"Do you want Obama re-elected in 2012?"
I definately do not want him to be re-elected. Worse than Obama simply doesn't exist.

Please, I am not buying into vitriol. I have no interest in getting into back-and-forth name-calling, so much of which goes on today and it supposed to pass for political discourse. Personally, I believe that I can disagree with people respectfully and simply see them as persons who have a different point of view, without resorting to insulting them as human beings. I don't doubt that most of the people who support candidates I do not are good people, who vote the way they think best and support candidates whom they think will make good choices. I'm certainly not going to be swayed from my point of view by someone who wants to score snark points.

You know what, I'm certainly aware that our system is not without its many, many, many problems, but as long as there are people in the world who quite literally put their lives on the line trying to earn the right to vote, and all I need to do so is tick a little box on a piece of paper and mail it away... I'm going to do it.

Personally, I find it really difficult to judge Obama as he inherited a country spiralling into a depression, fighting a war on 2 fronts and with deep internal divisions. Did he make it worse? Personally, I think the rise of the Tea Party plays into Obama's hands as they may frighten off a lot of centrist Republicans.

OK, imagine it's Obama v Palin ...who get's your vote?

I know, you do not understand why, but by all means: Palin.

Why do you think ther Tea Party may frighten off a lot of centrist Republicans ?
The Tea Party members are softies, centrist reps.

Klick, you're being quite the voice of reason in this thread! I totally agree with you.

As a non-american my knowledge of US politics is limited to a few US friends, the occassional Wall Street Journal, the BBC coverage and also the Jon Stewart v Bill oReilly debates on YouTube (which are great!). With the exception of the increase in medical care I can't seem to recall much criticism of Obama's actual policies. It would be interesting to hear what anyone who wouldn't vote for Obama has to say on what Obama has done wrong ie what policies has he introduced that were flawed.

Well, I have my moments.

For me it's like this: living outside of the US for the past 12 years has been a great opportunity for me to think about what it means to me to be a citizen of the United States of America, to think about my rights and responsibilities, and to think about the role of America in the larger world, and my role as a global citizen. Now, the conclusions I have come to may not be the same as anyone else, but you know what, that's OK. I'm unabashedly a lefty liberal and I wear that badge with no shame. However by the same token, I feel no need to shame those whose life experiences and hopefully thoughtful examination of their own truths have led them to draw different conclusions. United we stand, divided we fall, brother. I would much rather extend my hand to someone and say "We have fundamental disagreements about many things, but we are both people and we can agree to disagree and still find a way forward" than to call someone stupid, brainwashed, sick, evil, etc etc. It's unproductive and leads nowhere, and it's frankly just plain rude really.

Re: Do you want Obama re-elected in 2012?

Postby Stark » Tue Aug 23, 2011 11:10 am

Klick makes the most sense by a wide margin. It's idiots like 'trueblue' that have resulted in the US spiraling down to its present state. Where were these 'patriots' when Bush was spending like a sailor in a whore house, initiating illegal wars, gathering powers to the presidency which never had been enshrined in their oh-so-precious Constitution? Why is it when a black man (and yes, I think a lot of this vague Obama-hate comes back to him being an African American) ascends to the presidency suddenly all these policies that you happily bleated 'yes' to - deficit spending, entitlement program expansions (such as the prescription drug bill which was left entirely unfunded) - become the greatest threats to American freedom since the Nazis.

Has Obama made mistakes? Yes. His big mistake is that he is too much of a conciliator. The Republicans - not all, I have nothing against moderate fiscal / social Republicans - he has had to deal with are sociopaths. Pure and simple. They are crazies. Many are religious loonies, many are simply stupid and ignorant, and almost all of them do not have the interests of the country as a whole as first and foremost. They have been stupidly obstinate. Does Obamacare suck? Yeah, kinda. Why? Because the Republicans ripped out all the best policies, making things like single-payer, a government option non-starters from the beginning. Our health care system is broken. Obama correctly identified that it was the biggest problem in America. But he had to fix it when all the best options were already wiped from the table by the ignorant morons in Congress. He also passed the financial reform bill - great idea, needs to be done but again it was de-fanged by those idiots (both parties this time) who are beholden to Wall Street money. So let's recap what Obama has done in 3 years of presidency:

1: Obamacare. Most of the policies haven't been implemented yet, so really the jury is out. I'm not a big fan just looking at it, but America's health care is terrible right now, and the best options were withheld by the Republicans.
2: Financial Reform. Did do some good things, but left gaping loopholes for the fat cats to jump through. Again, this is the problem with our system of democracy. When you have a party of crazies - even in the minority - your hands are tied.
3: The Wars. They have been winding down. Yes, I want us out of them, as do most reasonable Americans, But we can't simply pack up and go home. These things take time, and progress has been made. We are almost out of Iraq, at least.
4: Deficit Spending. Bush is the real monster here. He had massive tax revenues, and he passed unfunded entitlements and gave tax cuts to the wealthy. Yes, the deficit has grown under Obama - but federal spending has FALLEN. The reason we have deficits now is because our tax revenue collapsed during the recession, and we had to pay for all the crap Bush foisted on the country.
5: Appointments. Here Obama did disappoint. I think he is simply naive, not insidious, but he turned the country's financial system over to the same foxes who fleeced everyone during the crisis - basically he let Goldman Sachs pull us from a catastrophe they themselves largely created. Yes, they have fancy PHDs. Yes, they are presidents of Harvard. But Summers and Geithner deserved to go to prison, not the Fed. Go see Inside Job.

Has Obama disappointed? A little, because expectations were so high. But if with a clear mind you review what he has done, and what he has had to deal with on his watch, and if you are a reasonably intelligent person (ie, not a Fox News drone) I think you have to agree that he's done a pretty good job with the hand he was dealt.

Can you imagine Palin or Old Man McCain or (shudder) Bachmann dealing with the same issues? THAT would be the downfall of America.

same way democRATS opposed bush policies now ok when its Obama doing it.

what's the difference between republiCONs and democRATs !!!

same policy ok when implement by their own.

Things benefiting common people are not implemented due do roadblock from other party.
But things benefiting banksters and special interest groups goes thru' with no problem

thank you for playing the game :)
