Donations (like Salvation Army)

Postby apod » Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:33 am

Is there anywhere here in Shanghai to make donations of used clothing - kind of like Salvation Army in the US? I have some clothes that don't fit so well anymore, don't need them, silly to bring them back home with me, feel bad throwing them out.

thanks

There are some NGOs/charitable groups doing clothes drive. BEAN Shanghai and Soho-Ku are two of them that I know of. They will be both present at the coming Expat Show (Sept. 17-19).

I'm not sure about clothes, but once i put old furniture out of our apartments.. and with in 1 hour or so there some young couple was bring it out. I was proud like did something good.

About clothes: it's hard to find same people who need it , but you may wash/dry it and put in same location there poor people/garbage collectors/etc often checking. Usually i do it same way.

Actually, maybe Shanghaiexpat or someone could organise a big drop off. Maybe at a bar or something. Drop off a box of old clothes, get a free beer or BBQ, and there can be one big donation to a worthy charity.

I'm sure every one of us would have at least 1 box of junk we don't need, but that someone could definitely use, especially coming into winter.

Thanks lianshuisgq for the helpful list! I usually offer any items/clothes we don't want to our Ayi first (she usually takes the clothes), and then hold on to the rest until someone's office is doing a donation collection (usually around December). But now I can check with the Red Cross in Shanghai too!

River of Hearts
A subsidiary of Community Center Shanghai, this charity collects and distributes clothing, toys, books and household goods to those in need. Volunteers are needed for box packing, transportation, donation organization and event hosting. They've got eight drop-off locations throughout the city, both in Pudong and Puxi, so you'll have no trouble unloading your used items for a good cause.

Soho-Ku is a local charity helping out mentally and physically disabled people around Shanghai.

We are always in need of gently used clothes EXCEPT underwear. We also welcome used (running) computers and small furniture.
Our office is near Zhongshan park and open Monday to Friday from 9 to 4.

Good stuff.

I've always had a lot of stuff i need to get rid of (fluctuating weight and all!). This charity sounds good.

Do you pick up?
