DVD 9's from the street vs. a shop (price)

Postby DesertSpider » Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:35 pm

Just curious what people are paying these days for good quality DVD 9's from shops these days.

I have connections to both the shop and the street vendors even though their prices vary greatly.

What is the current going 'rates' ?

My experience:

street: 5 RMB

shop: 15 - 20 RMB

(curious if that accountability / traceability by having a brick and mortar place justifies the difference)

I've only been to one shop so far in my month here in Shanghai. For DVD boxsets I pay about 40-60RMB each. For a movie, the listed price for recent ones were 20RMB. A friend was with me that had some discount card for 20% off. The place was next to some craft market and below an Indian restaurant on Hong Mei Rd I believe. The store was really nice, quite a few foreigners in it, so I expected the price to be higher than average (though I didn't know what avg was).

I wanted to get some Korean shows, as the girls looked cute..haha..but I didn't see any that said they had english subtitles and the worker I asked didn't think they had them either, but he wasn't sure. Anyone else know if its common/uncommon to find eng subs on korean series?

New shop opened a few weeks ago in Pudong on Shangcheng Road (by the car washes) near Yanlord Garden. Price is 8 RMB for DVD 9 and 5 RMB for DVD 5. Negotiate price in Shanghainese. Bought about 10 DVDs there on 2 visits and all worked.

I've never seen D9's for 5RMB, cheapest is 8RMB.
D5 - usually around 5RMB, or 6-8RMB in a shop.

Boxed sets DON'T cost more. They cost the same as 1DVD x how many in the box.
eg 6 DVD's in set, price is 6 x DVD cost

Cost on D5's is around 2.5 - 3rmb, D9's about 5-6RMB last time I checked.
There are different quality producers, some are cheaper, some more expensive, check the name on the packaging...

If you go to a DVD Style store, you pay more, but generally not that much more - eg 10RMB / 15RMB for D5/D9. Eg Hollywood on Dagu lu or the ones down on Hong Mei Lu.

My neighbour used to sell DVD's to the states until he got busted and put in Jail.
At the time of his arrest, he was doing about 7k$ a day in sales. The major cost was the shipping, not the DVD's. The shipping companies were making a fortune out of him.

YES, NEVER PAY MORE THAN THIS! Anything higher is just a scam...for reference, in volumes of 50 or more, dvd5's only cost the vendor about 1.5rmb.
Once any vendor thinks they can hold out for 15 or 20 rmb for a good dvd9, then they'll force that price on everyone, then word gets around to all the vendors.....think supply and demand...we have to stick together...they do. it's like tipping.

Hi,

i know:

streetprice: 5 (Never pay more !!)
shop price: 15 - 30

But in the Pudong Fake Market near Next Age you get DVDs in very good quality for 5, too. e.g. Box sets depend on the number of dvds - 10 dvds = 50)

i've never seen anyone pay more than 10rmb for a real dvd9 in a shop. any shop tries to charge you 15~30, just don't pay it.
YOU are the consumer, supply and demand, YOU can control the price. It won't kill you to go without a dvd for one weekend, just say NO, then watch the prices fall.

real D9 would cost about 10, at least 8. and D5 would cost 5, but some good version would cost 8. don't buy street disks due to awful quality. I am finding good suppliers for high quality version disk, maybe you can buy from me next year.

I just bought some real BlueRay and HD DVD for RMB10 not much selection, about 4-5 titles.

DVD / crap mall.
Xi Kang lu / Yi Chang Lu by Suzhou creek.

Also real DVD's from oversea's for RMB3 each.
Chinese "copy" DVD's are RMB5-6 for D5, RMB 8-10 for D9.

Didn't see any HD DVD on DVD, which is what I was looking for.

I'm going to try the Blueray on the PS3, and the HD DVD on the XBox6:30 Jet Engine impersonator to see what they're like.

I get my 52" HD Screen in about 2 weeks :)

How did you verify they were real HD/BR discs? The stores tell me they can't make those yet but they can take an HD or BR and copy it to a dvd9/480p. That's why some packages say BluRay on the outside

I'm so sure you make powerpoints to your corporate office talking about how IP protection is weak in China and how they are animals because of it.

I find it very hypocritical that the US has all this thing going on against China regarding IP but at the same time a huge percentage of torrent traffic happens in the US.

Just bought a few minutes ago, off the street, 2 new movies, (9's), and Office XP for my 2nd computer. Cost RMB 4 each!. True. Also, any prob. I can take back.
Never had a prob. yet. This is Putuo District, however, so prices are lower here.

They're real HDDVD, and real Blue Ray.
Original's.

RMB10 each, again not much choice.

Maybe about 5 titles in the stores that have. Most of the places that sell real dvd's will have them. Real dvd's are about 3rmb each, cheaper because they have no chinese subtitles.

1. your reply has nothing to do with my post - but even a blind man with a shotgun will eventually hit something

2. as a self-proclaimed, future CEO, do you think you should have posted all those posts about your torrent habits?

3. you should read more about all the United Stateseans that have been arrested for illegal downloading. The US is powerless to arrest people in China. The US movie industry wants to make sure they get their piece of the China market when the China market can afford to buy legal copies. The China government has done a good job explaining that with an average wage of less than $3000/year in China, people can not afford to buy real DVD's here. So, the US is not losing much in movie sales, but it is a bargaining chip. As future CEO, you'll learn that's important. What will you say when a local shop starts copying your T-shirt designs? Notice too that companies like Netflix and Blockbuster in the US offer DVDs by mail with packages that let people rent DVD's for about the same price as you buy a fake one here but locals rent the ones you buy for 1 or 2 RMB before you buy them. Just food for thought.

i've got myself a Sony's topline KLV-46X with Full HD last night and been on a movie marathon ever since, we could swap some real BR or HD DVD discs some day :)
