Hey all, question about Shenzhen please?

Seen here:
http://shanghaiist.com/2012/01/05/shenzhen_drivers_must_now_yield_to.php
Furthermore, everyone's favorite scourge of the road, ebikes, will also be more strictly regulated by size - so hopefully that means an end to 100 pound "bicycles" screaming by at 45MPH. Any ebike that breaks the size restriction (1.5m high, 0.15m wide, 0.3m long) will be confiscated and the driver fined up to 2,000RMB.

These measurements can't be correct? Anybuddy here know the right numbers?

Thanks

I think such restriction on measurement doesn't exist...but it is for Shenzhen, not sure about that.

In Shanghai, the restriction are: weight not heavier than 45KGS, speed not faster than 20KM/H...which means 90% of the e-bike on the road are illegal...

Some sick SOB slashed my seat on Saturday morning... It was at the usual place I parked and normally there is a lady parking attendant, but since it's raining that day, she wasn't there. I went for the Expat coffee meeting and found the cut when leaving home. Curse that bastard!

I noticed there's a suvillance cam facing that place on the shpping mall entrance, but feel like too many trouble...

I was looking forward to buy e-bike here, so I have one. :)

What about this group, is it dead, or?

Hi,

Winter is a "low" season for the riding hobby, i think you should already feel it by now... :D

Please keep an eye on this thread time to time, meet-ups might be organized when weather is warmer.

Mean while, feel free to share your story here.

It is cold, but I am driving anyway. :) I have no other choice.
I usually end at work at 1 a.m. in Pudong. Only way how to go to XuJiaHui in night is with motorbike (and ferry). :)

Let me know, if you´re planning something.

Large Zoomer

Postby jonmyers » Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:38 pm

Hey Guys:

Do any of you have experience with the larger zoomer seen here:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=1014 ... id=&pm_id=

If so, how is the speed/acceleration and what is the range of this bike? The standard version will hold 5 batteries (60V) without any modification. I am thinking about selling my big vespa in the spring and switching to one of these. Any thoughts?

Best Regards,
Jon

It is a cool ride for sure.

My experience: I've upgraded my bike from 48V800W to 60V800W (battery and controller board upgrade), the main differences are better acceleration, higher top speed and slightly longer range. But do remember that the harder you push the speed/acceleration, the shorter the range.

But that was on the same bike (large vespa type). If you're having a 48V bike right now, I guess there are not much different as the bigger tyre of this zoomer takes more power to accelerate, and consume more power for the ride. I think you can get higher top speed, 40-50KM/H maybe...

And I notice the taobao shop you've refer is outside of SH, suggest to buy this at a shop near by your place...maybe the same shop you've bought your vespa.

Hope to see your new ride next meeting if you decided to give it a try.

Enjoy

Large Zoomer

Postby jonmyers » Wed Feb 08, 2012 5:51 pm

Hi Jess,

I suspect the range of the large zoomer would be better than the big Vespa/Turtle as it probably weighs less. Some of the guys on this board say they get at least 50km range out of the smaller zoomer. The taobao ad (which you can't believe) says 45-60km. Can anybody confirm the range for their zoomer?

I have to do something with my battery. My range in this cold is about 40km max. :(
¨
Jesslsk, do you have more information how to do that?

Can I sell my old battery, or I have to put that away? :(

Careful before you switch to a Big Turtle/Vespa.....I only get about 25km range out of my 1 year old SLA batteries (48V). Even less now in the cold weather....but my batteries are probably getting old too. From what I understand, LiON batteries do not have a such a large range reduction (if any) in cold weather. Jess, you have LiON batteries don't you? Is this true?

There are some factors contribute to the range, but all of them can be concluded as "power consumption". A standard zoomer should be lighter than the vespa (not sure, never look into that, but Vespa shouod be among the most heavy vehicle type), but the one you're interested has bigger tyre, which is quite a burden for an 800W engine. That's why I suspect there is not much of improvement in range.

SLA battery's performance drop in cold weather is unavoidable, my previous experience shows it will decrease more than 30% (I can only manage to get 25kms from a 48V20A battery during the first winter), but mine is the heavy vespa type...so your 40kms performance is no need to worry, i think your battery is fine. Anyway, the estimated lifespan of SLA battery in max 2 years and it starts to drop after the first year, according to some e-bike users I know in the shops.

Earlier in this thread one of the Expat suggested some kind of "heating" device to use on the battery, I didn't actually look into that since I've change to Li-Ion battery shortly after that. Maybe you can check on that...

About old battery, ther're some bike shop willing to do trade-in or buy in old battery. You can keep an eye on those bike shop/service station on this.

Haha...I just mentioned about the same thing on my previous reply...

Yes, Li-Ion battery is better dealing with this situation, and longer life span

Yes, there is one at HongGu Road near ShuiCheng Road. Not the cheapest in town but the after sale service is good, which is very important in my opinion.

Let me know if you need my help (mainly translation, the boss doesn't speak much english), PM me your contact and we'll make an appointment. Or, tell the boss "the guy with long hair, has a black vespa" introduce you to the place.

And the big vespa that I have is the best option of two people.

Heard about there will be a round of "action" toward E-bike in SH, in order to reduce oversize, overweight and over-power E-bike on the streets, which representing almost 80% of what we seen everyday. This is kind of a yearly thingy in SH for past 2 years, and will followed by setting up a lot of "check-points" around the city...

Here are some advices:
- Always bring along your receipt, as a prove of purchase of your bike.
- Avoid taking passenger for these few weeks, as this is clearly prohibited. This will make you a clear target.
- If you're caucasian, african, indian or any other races which are obviously distinct from chinese . make sure people can recognize that from a distance. As this reduces the chance of being stopped to minimum.
- Be extra "nice" on the road, avoid getting in any form of arguement or dissension with other road users.

Good luck!

I've seen two incidents that scooters being stopped (one gas, one electric) because of carrying passenger on the passed week end. So i guess we should avoid taking passenger for a while, at least not on a long distance.

One at the junction of West Zhongshan Rd & Tianshan Rd, another at the junction of Jiangsu Rd and a small road which I can't recall the name.

LPG I guess, didn't look in details because don't want to get attention from the police :P .

Anyway, only those yellow colour class A plates are allowed to carry passenger in the city area, the rest of the bikes (electric, LPG or Petrol with other types of number plate) are not allowed. Yes the police usually don't take action everytime, but it is still clearly stated among the regulations.

Just a kind reminder to "be nice" during these few weeks.

I think what they should clamp down hard on are the overloaded trucks / trailers and cement mixers and working vehicles with tires which should have been scrapped long ago and not forgeting public buses which never stop.

As long as the same group of people is on the roads, these will soon be replaced by other types of vehicles. Any preference you can think of?

Hey Guys, agree with everyone that battery range is decreased in winter. I have had my bike since August, already about 2000km on it. I definitely want to expands my range (regardless of weather) because I make many many sales trips in Puxi. I had a few questions.

(Jess, we bought the bike together, the wine colored bike with my gf from Malaysia in August)

1. I hear that if I have a turtle shell/Vespa style bike that I can put 2nd battery in it (also needs dedicated 2nd charger). This adds a lot of weight I know; but does anyone know this process and cost. For example; just need to pay for 2nd battery and charger or also need to "modify" the bike.

2. If not installing a 2nd battery; rather expand from 48V 20A to 60V 20A; what should the cost of this new battery be; and value of some trade in of 48V 20A.

3. If moving to 2 battery model, need more power to carry all the weight. Currently I have 800W power; my neighborhood shop tried to sell me 1000W power box for 330rmb when I went in for some service (actually he tried to rip me off from a problem I had caused by alarm circuit).

Anyway, just some thoughts on how to expand the range for people who don't have money to spend on Li-Ion.

I'm going to be near Shuicheng Lu and China Yu shop today - might ask some questions there.
