Do I need a driving licence for an electric bike/moped/scooter?
No.

Do you need a drivers / motorcylce licence for a gas powered moped / scooter? I'll be looking at geting either a 50cc or between 100 - 125 cc moped / scooter when I arrive in Shanhai if you don't.

I do not hold any form of licence from the UK or China, though I can ride as int he UK you can ride using your provisional, so I have two years riding experience.

Cheers.

Just an update, the links in the OP are not working, is the same regulation still in force?

Found a new working list with a gigantic list of pictures here http://www.shbicycle.com/plist.asp, is this the list of legal bikes?

Hope your talking real motorcycles here, not them gay e-scooters / e-bikes.
All sorts of motorcycles can easily be bought but import bikes and registration-plates are expensive!

So to be legal my e-scooter must only be capable of 15kph - is that correct? I have heard it might be 20 kph also.

Another question - I have seen some at the local bike store at the big mall here in Minhang and they run between 2krmb - 3krmb new.

Where is a good place to find one second hand? I'll try the classifieds on shex I guess. Prob better to go new as they don't seem overly robust or made to last.

Thoughts?

No, to be legal, your e-bike must be listed on the official government website list of approved bikes.

This means that the factory selling the bikes has an appropriate license.
The bikes have pedals
The bikes don't go above a certain speed etc etc.

Generally speaking, if you buy the bike at a larger place like Carrefour, or one of the larger chain stores, it will be legal.

You'll need to license the bike after purchase - that process is detailed in the first post of this thread.

Second hand ones - you can check Baixing, sh.58.com for local sales, or craigslist, enjoy shanghai etc for foreigner sales.

Hi,

I wanna buy escooter (Vespa style)...new or used one, doesn't matter. So, if you are selling one or have some advice where to ask for it, I would appreciate your reply.

..and please tell me if I need to have the registration plate and insurance ...

Thanks...

You dont want to read whole discussion, right? :))

You can not get legal PLATE for Vespa escooter. So it is not easy to find shop, where you can buy it.
But for example here -Longwu lu crossed with railtrack (on right side if you are going from town) - just ask old guy to open his closed garage - he has two really nice Vespa escooters for 2,5k.

Just as a slight aside - is there a place where I can route a journey round Shanghai for mopeds/and bikes? I know in google maps for example, you can select public transport, or walking but I haven't seen any kind of map to indicate where bikes/mopeds can or can't go.

I take the taxi to work at the moment but I have ordered a scooter and note that they tend to go different ways due to restrictions etc, and knowing me, I will get lost.

Have you ordered eletric scooter? If yes, your range for trips will be pretty small. :(

I am using bicycle and electric scooter and only places where you can not go are tunnels, elevated roads and bridges (except Cheting Hwy bridge). There might be other places with signs that you can not go, but just look around - Chinese cyclist will show you that line is not a wall.. :D
