Entertianment Advice for a Visitor

Postby ripvan » Wed Aug 23, 2006 5:23 pm

Hi! I am a business visitor to Shanghai looking for some advice. I am here only for a short time (leave the 25th) and I am staying at the Hilton Hotel on Hua Shan Road. Hanging out in the evenings here isn't particularly fun, the food and drink is horribly overpriced and populated by pretentious business types (which I suppose I should be, but not my thing). I was hoping to get advice on where near me would be a fun place to go where foreigners aren't too out of place and is friendly fun and might have cheap food/beer. Some attractive women to look at wouldn't hurt either, but that isn't the main focus. It is just to get out of here and have a fun evening.

Thanks

Xintiandi is a compact place with many different places to eat and drink. some decent music. the prices are high but the quality is good. All taxi drivers seem to know where it is.

Other choices are Tongren Lu or Maoming Lu.
Can't love'em, can't trust'em, all their egos are funny.

well, if you are trying to avoid overpriced food and drink, XinTianDi may be out too. There are practical places to get a bite and drinks but most of the places in town cater to the on-expense types or those stuck-in-the-city-so-we-pay types. Personally, I like going to two places in town for drinks that i think are reasonable: Senses Wine Lounge at 515 Jian Guo West Rd, and Cottons, at JianGua West Rd and An Ting Rd. Both are a block and a half from each other so youc an go try both. Both have nice customers and are friendly places.

For decently priced foods, you can take a longer taxi ride out to the Hong Mei Leisure Street which has a selection fo various cuisines and is less pretentious that XinTianDi, and less costly, though the taxi ride may wipe that out.

Tonight though, you can come by Malone's 3rd floor where the ShanghaiExpat Weekly Mixer takes place and meet "real" people and just have some drinks at a discounted rate of 25rmb. Hope this helps!

Thanks folks, those all sound like great suggestions.

Windows seems like walking distance, but may be a little louder than I am looking for... I would actually like to chat with people here, foreign or local. Though I am a sucker for a cheap drink, takes me back to my University days! But you can tell me if I am wrong.

The invitation to Malone's is a good one, could you tell me how far that would be from where I am? Any food nearby?

Thanks again

Tried to get to Malone's but the taxi dropped me somewhere totally different and no one on the street either was comfortable with english, or was familiar with Malone's. Just a touch of bad luck. So ate dinner at a nearby place and came back to the hotel. At least I avoided eating here.

Sorry to hear that ripvan. Next time ask your concierge to write out the address in Chinese for you. If you come back, there is an expat event every Weds. at Malones that is a good hangout. Cheers!

Some of the pubs on Huashan Lu opposite the Hilton are OK, e.g. Real Shanghai Cafe and El Cubano - a Cuban place on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Crossroads Bar, that just opened last week (their first place is out west towards the domestic airport).
