European doctor moving to Shanghai

Postby shydrager » Sun Sep 05, 2010 6:17 pm

Hi everyone!

As my husband has been offered relocating to Shanghai we are now in the pro/con's discussion and a major issue is: would I be able to work in a hospital in Shanghai beeing a european trained specialist?
Has anyone of you heard of or know a western doctor working in Shanghai beeing expat and if yes what are the conditions?

I am very thankful for any kind of information you have!

As a doctor, yes. Nurse or something else? might be difficult.

What's your specialty? I know of Dr's and Anaetheologists (spelling?). But that's about it.

There's probably 3 or 4 places you could hit up.

GHC (Is that what they're called, in Kerry centre?)
Parkway (used to be world link)

couple of others. Someone will provide details.

Definitely a need for a neurologist here ! :)

yes, it's called the Global Healthcare Clinic.
On a larger scale, you may want to try SinoUnited Health or Shanghai United Family Hospital.
Good luck :)

Hi Grosha,
though over the time I saw quite some children with neurological problems I am specialised in adults or adolescents, not babies, I am sorry not to be able to help you out!

shydrager,

I'm pretty sure you could work here, and as a private neurologist, you could probably do quite well.

But you will need to find employment first. I think you should consider making a reconnaissance trip and (as Mat suggested) "hitting" all the likely places - which would be the foreign-owned private clinics and chains.

Try Parkway Health, Worldpath, GHC (Global Healthcare, http://www.ghcchina.com), United Family for starters. Try to make appointments with the practice managers. If one of them wants to hire you, they will smooth your path. But you'll need to go through a process back home too - get notarised copies of your medical degree and specialist qualifications, then get those translated and "chopped" by the local Chinese consulate, then get that stuff sent over to China, etc etc etc...

It's all eminently do-able. I'm pretty sure you will be able to get work here.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

Thank you, coxaca, I will get to see the hospitals on my next visit to SH with my husband! I

Anyway I am aware that everything needs to be translated, I already had to do this once moving to another country and it was quite a lot of paper work. But from that experience I know now it is possible getting through a lot of - in that case very special french - red tape.
