With the number of posts on here and the fact that most people start by offering me RMB7 a disc ... I can't fathom why you'd pay a premium when buying that many.

Not have much experience in Xiangyang market, but like to shopping in private shops.
In Xiangyang market, I bought:
a Polo long-sleeve sweater(made of cotton)--50rmb(but I think I should bargain for a even lower price.)
a nice light-red leather coat(well design)--200rmb
handmade bracelet--28rmb for 3
a silk long scarf with pink Dior logo--30rmb

You should be able to get any pair of sneakers in XiangYang market for less than 100 RMB.

Yeah I know, it was my last day and I was in a hurry and got really tired of bargaining. 10 euro cents more or less, I couldnt care less.

But I do have a target, DVD's for 5RMB next time.

^ All the Xiangyang DVD dealers will go down to 5 RMB a disc. They don't like it, but they all will after 5 minutes or so. But better to know the dealer, 'cause the quality is definitely widely variable at that point.

Plus, as you said . . . it's the equivalent of 0.20 Euro. Which doesn't really matter all that much to a visitor, I would think.

Of course, as a "local", I bargain my butt off, so I'm not really one to talk . . .

:D

In general, I was referring to the quality of the DVDs themselves and how the quality varies widely based on what movie it is, when it came out, who burnt it, etc. I meant to observe that if you have a reliable dealer in Xiangyang Market, or at least someone who knows you fairly well, then they'll usually steer you away from the ones that they know are crap quality.

My most reliable guy is the one who has his stock in the brown cupboard immediately to the right when you go into the covered part of via the back/market-side entrance. It looks like an old, abandoned cupboard until you ask one of the guys sitting around in the belt/Mont Blanc stall if they know where you can get DVDs.

I really do not have a clue which one you mean. The moment I step out of the cab, there are all guys coming at me yelling: dvd buy watch. Hilarious!

Anyway, I always get lost there!

So 5RMB huh, ok will do next time, I like to bargain, but not when I'm fed up with it and had been doing it for almost 2 hours.

The price depends on who bargain.
And normally, if it is asked by foreigner, the sale man offer higher price.
You shall insist on the price you offer. Otherwise, just let it go.

Watch out for the cheap ones not using the real raw materials...a magnet will stick to the titanium. Actually, I found out later the putter was crap. But everything else is great.

i once got a tip from a local that you should NEVEREVER pay more than 25% of the initial asking price. anyway, thats subjective to how much you really want it i guess.

the idea is to counter bid a ridiculously low price on the item of interest. and insist on it. if the the first dealer lets you go, simply hop over to the next store and bid for the same item at a slightly higher price, and on to the next, until the break point is finally tested. everybody is selling the same stuff. and in the name of perfect competition, you should be getting the best price this way. although its understood that the whole market is one big cartel, with a silent agreement to maintain certain minimum profit margin. so do not be moved by the "i'm not making money on this deal" look.

happy shopping guys.

looks like this thread is a laundry list of XiangYang shopping items.
if you believe something is reasonable and you do like the quality and design, just pay for the damn thing.
my recommendation for a reference price is to take the item and think how much it will sell back home, add/deduct for visual quality inspection, deduct for living standard, add/deduct for how desirable this item is to you. Then you come to a final price acceptable to you. you minimize your buyer's remorse because you have made a carefully thought of decision before your purchase. otherwise just go to a non-bargain store (e.g. most malls), there are lots of this kind in sh.
now go shop and have fun!

Dfoo, I vote for you. Sure you can use Baridi's method if you like to be ripped off. Sure at the end when you get ripped off (because once in a while you will) you can say: The price was good for me so it's OK. But if people are willing to help you not getting ripped off, I think the least you could do is to thank them for it and not ... this is why I started this thread; ;-)

The trick is that you have to be willing to walk away if their not going to go low enough for you. If you don't really know how much to pay *always* err on the side of being too low. Walk away from a few of the vendors, eventually you'll figure out where the breaking point is. There are very few vendors that actually sell unique items -- the vendors generally buy large amounts of an item to get a good price, and then distribute it around the market.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in general the goods in this market are not good quality... They are not comparible to the real thing. It may not be obvious when you buy the good in the market, but after you've owned it for a while you'll soon see where the defects are. The material wears out very quickly, the dye runs out when you wash it, those shoes have very thin soles that wear out immediately, the suitcase joins were not done carefully so that the material seperates in use, etc. etc

One trick to watch out for when buying T-shirts and shirts is that if they run off to 'find your size' and come back with the XL one you asked for, make sure that they haven't just stuck an 'XL' tag on an 'M' shirt! I was duped once and have seen people hiding between stalls attaching the desired size. Some of the fancier tricksters will actually snip off the real tag and place a real looking sticker on the shirt. Just check with the same shirt in the shop - if the others have sewn on tags and yours isn't sewn on, it probably isn't the right size.

Don't fall for the 'it was a mistake at the factory line' either. I actually tell them before they run off not to bother changing the tag and lo and behold, they often come back empty handed!

If I'm buying for myself now, I always take the shirt I'm going to buy out of the wrapping and hold it up to make sure it fits. If buying for others, I take a tape measure and double check the actual size that way.

Spread the word - I hate being deceived like that.....!

Oh, I forgot to mention that they sometimes even change the size whilst rummaging in the storage section at the back of the shop. Always check!

The 3 RMB sounds very suspicious to me.... AFAIK "standard" price for a DVD9 is around 13-15 RMB. Standard price for a DVD is 5-7. The shop I normally buy PS2/XBOX games at XuJiaHui charges 6 RMB for DVD, and 15 for DVD9.
