I was wondering whether or not I need a fapiao when renting an apartment. Why or why not?

It depends,..
Are u an expat that is being paid using the CBP system for foreigners? (China Benefit Plan)
If so, you might need to collect Fapiao to submit to your payroll to get a portion of your pay tax-free...

If you are on a Company package, they may need it for a tax deduction.
If not, don't bother. To ask for a Fapiao will add about 5% to your rent.
Conversly, to not need a Fapiao should reduce your rent by 5%.

If you pay for the rent from your own wallet, a 收据( Shou Ju) is enough.

If you pay the landlord from banktransfer, please keep the bank slip.

If your company pay the rent, a fa piao is needed attaching to the balance book for your accountant in your company.

Yes. ask for a Fapiao will add about 5% to your rent. and a fake Fapiao 2%.
