fighting with shanghainese or fighting with dongbei ren

Questions and Answers about living in Shanghai here.

fighting with shanghainese or fighting with dongbei ren

Postby crying_freeman » Wed Sep 30, 2009 4:29 am

shanghainese = the fight will never start, but standby some cash if u hit them.

dongbei ren = it is a sure fight and they will use weapons like knifes.

Therefore, beware and stay out of trouble.

Since june this year, there are around 10 foreigners die in a street fight/KTV or pubs in china and nobody seems to know about it unless it is on the news. My friend in HK just told me about it and the latest was a foreign student die in heilongjiang, jia mu shi city.

Is it legal to keep a knife on you in China? Or any self defense items for that matter? Pepper spray, taser, etc.

10 in last 4 months... this would be 30 per annum.

As comparison: With population of typical larger European countries, this figure would be very roughly closer to 1 head p.a.

I have lived in Beijing for 2 years, and have lived in Shanghai for 3 years. In Beijing the crowd would form a circle around the fight and cheer as punches were landed. They would push the losing guy who wants to run away back in to the middle to keep fighting.

In Shanghai they stand in a circle, but have a look of fear in their eyes that someone might actually throw a real punch. The only people that actually fight in Shanghai are the women. And those women can do some nasty shiat! The men slap, they don't know how to punch.

Carry a lead reinforced handbag. Makes great pounding weapon.

^... er.... are you sure you live in the modern times? fighting is everywhere in the world so deal with it. That is why I never gave up on martial arts training. Its useful everywhere from the streets of Brazil to the streets of Shanghai.

Although spending time at bars, KTV, clubs is fine and I won't discourage people not to go, what matters most is which crowd you're hanging around with.

I had a motorcycle guy chase me with a wrench the other day. Men from which region of China are known for attacking with wrenches? His Mandarin sounded pretty standard--when he said "cao ni ma" I thought to myself "nice accent, definitely not from Shanghai". And unlike a Shanghairen, he didn't try to kick me like a gay ballerina.

You were lucky, just one guy on the bike.

You are right, listen to the mandarin accent first. Avoid them if they want to start a fight with you. These people will kill you if you fight with them, or you might end up in the hospital for 2 months. Last year, my australian roommate end up in the hospital for 6 weeks. He got into a fight with 6 guys at henshan road and the policeman never solve the case. His girlfriend got a few punches from them too, she told me those people are "dongbei ren". Not very gentleman though. One week before, 3 other foreigners landed inside the same hospital and one of them was in ICU, very serious condition.

FYI, dont worry about the medical bills, call 110 let the policeman bring you to the hospital if things happen... that's one thing good about being a laowai in shanghai, they will save you first. If you are a local, 1000 to 2000rmb deposit is needed to register at the counter, but now rules changed because the shanghai government enforce new laws into their system to save lifes.

Wait wait wait, can someone answer the question I had on "Is it legal to keep a knife on you in China? Or any self defense items for that matter? Pepper spray, taser, etc."

Answer or I'll be forced to tase you!

Just kidding, I really did wonder. :)

I got into a fight on Hengshan Lu. The managers of MT3. 3 guys on one, naturally. Them using their belts, skewers from the yang rou chuar guy and a plastic chair and me with my fist. 6 guards there and they just watched and got in the way. They ran off after a while.

Misteral - Ha Ha... stay in the kitchen.

Beidong - u must be Mr. Ali... be safe than be sorry. I bet those are shanghainese and you can handle 10 of them at one time.

Remember, "Dongbei ren" ... 2 is enough to kill you. Dont go home in a box.

haha, me too.

my way to say "hello" to them. I dont want to be rude to the locals, so always give them a "BIG" treat that they want. I lost my count... 30 or 50 in 5 years. I love China. Happy National Day.

morris - i think u are new in shanghai? try this, "cao ni ma, dongbei ren shi wang ba." and see what kind of treatment you will get? Dont worry, shanghainese wouldnt hit you...no one dare to.

btw, there is no such thing as "one on one fight". In their views, it is very silly to do so.

Put it this way, they are brave enough to stab you with a knife.

Dongbei = liaoning, heilongjiang and jilin.

hey, do you guys really understand what Dongbei Ren refers to? It actually means ppl from northeast China. Ppl from there have strong self-esteem and tend to solve issues thru fighting.
Some dangerous kinds of knives are forbidden from carrying in China but seems no cops come up to search your body untill cases happened. I always carried a knife when I was travelling in northeast of China. Later a friend told me actually that's unnecessary since a broken bottle is as powerful as a knife.
Anyway try hard not to get into fight with dongbei ren since they dont consider the consequence before starting fight.
