Any Filipino expats in this site?

The are some good threads on this board that, for the lack of a better word, you might call community discussions. This is our miscellaneous topic of Topics in Detail and lots of the great, undefinable, pearls of wisdom, personal observations, or other useful details go here.

hi, ang filipinos,

I am sorry to jump in like this. I wonder if anyone would care to help me on some informations:

I am planning on going to Manila to see the John Mayer concert on October 1st. Anyone going also?

Any suggestion on how to get there? affordable and conveniently? i was suggested Cebu airlines by a philippino friend. Is it a direct flight?

Another crucial question is which is the best way to purchase ticket? Via ticket master and/or ticket net? I surveyed aka tried booking and having doubts about how to obtain the tickets, is picking up at the counter a safe option or courier? The option for courier seems to just cover domestic area.

Please please advice.. thanks before..

Hm... not sure how popular the guy is in the Philippines, but if he's BIG, chances are, tickets are already sold out. I have never tried booking tickets online, so I don't know if you can do that and then just pick up the ticket when you arrive in Manila.

tickets are still available online, but not many options as i cant choose gold & platinum. seems like they are reserved for channel V, and only telephone number given to contact the tv channel.

I love his music and thats enough. I just hope the event is worth watching, plus, always want to visit the philippines. Now i have reason, big one. Maybe see Cebu or Boracay after..

True enough, I do like tofu, and I have the slightest idea who the guy - John Mayer - is (though I've heard the name).

^ 3.5 years is long enough. I hate noontime shows. Is John Mayer the singer of "Your Body is a Wonderland"? I do know the song, but I'm not good with remembering who sang what song in which year, etc.

Hey, are you able to book your ticket? Why not just call to book a ticket? Cheap way to call Philippines is to add "12593" + "00" + "63"(country code)+"2" (area code in metro manila)+ the landline number.

I hope you'll make it there. John Mayer is a funny guy. I like his music but not as much as I like Adam Lambert who will also have a concert in Manila next month.

In fairness to you, friend.... I doubt if the majority of the people in Philippines know John Mayer.

He is a real artist kaya he has lesser commercial appeal. Maganda yung Continuum album nya though mejo lounge-ish/lazy ang melodies, which do not appeal to the general public saten. So I bet hindi din masyado ang airplay ng music nya at the time. Kasi marami pa syang ibang magagandang tracks sa album nya and yet people only know about "Your Body is A Wonderland" dahil yung lang ang makikita mo sa MTV! Hehe ( I personally like "Waiting For The World To Change" na madalas ginagamit sa audition for American Idol).

PINOY CONTRACTOR ABROAD

Three contractors are bidding to fix the White House fence.

One from the Philippines , another from Mexico and an American.

They go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The American contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. Well,” he says. “I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Mexican contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Filipino contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers: “$2,700.”

The official, incredulous, says, “What? You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure? How do you expect me to consider your service with that bid??

“Easy,” the Pinoy explains, “$1,000 for you, $1,000 for me and we hire the guy from Mexico “.

The next day, the Pinoy and the Mexican are working on the Fence.

FIRST THE BAD news: Thanks to the profligacy of the previous administration, the 78-day-old Aquino (Part II) administration has no other way to support the government but to borrow tons of money.

But the good news is, well, borrowing money overseas has never been easier, safer and cheaper.

In fact, foreign banks are even battling each other just to be able to lend money to the Philippine government, despite the current administration’s admitted booboo in that recent police comedy of a rescue at the park.

Last Saturday, seemingly beaming with confidence, the Department of Finance (DOF) issued IOUs abroad—worth an equivalent of $1 billion—to help cover for the yawning budget deficit left behind by the cute administration of Gloriaetta.

The IOUs became a hit. Banks came forward with more than $13 billion worth of bids for the $1 billion issuance. There was not enough for everybody. The government therefore could entertain only the banks that offered the lowest cost.

The float should easily set the basis for the price of future borrowings of the Philippine government. It should be cheap. After all, the government is projecting its bond issuance abroad to hit $2.5 billion next year just to keep itself afloat.

Then the GOOD NEWS,,
THERE was nothing unusual, of course, about the Philippine government issuing IOUs. As a matter of fact, the government last year issued more than a trillion pesos worth of bonds. I tell you, if you want to get rich, one way is to master the bond market here. The name of the financial game now is bonds.

Anyway, last week’s bond issuance, ably handled by the national treasury, was directed at foreign banks. The big difference was that the bonds were denominated in pesos.

Let me repeat that: Foreign investors bought peso-denominated bonds. They were not dollar or yen or euro bonds.

It never happened before. In the past, when the government issued IOUs, they were always denominated mainly in the currencies of the world’s richest countries.

In a way, the banks then were saying that investors did not have any confidence in the Philippine peso. It ultimately meant they did not like the way the Philippine economy was going, how the government was running it.

And so for the first time ever for this country, and even for the entire Asean region, investors abroad accepted government IOUs denominated in the local currency—worth an equivalent of $1 billion, at that!

The banks must have thought hard about their bids, considering all the risks involved in getting peso bonds at low yield. The amount was not … well, peanuts.

Then the BAD NEWS
I THOUGHT that the peso bond float said a lot about the renewed confidence of foreign investors in the future of the Philippines, with or without the Luneta tragedy.

The buyers even came from Europe, Asia and the United States. Investors in those financial centers always know what they are doing. In the fast business of finance, they are the hardest bunch to please.

What the peso-denominated float of the Aquino (Part II) administration tells the business community is this: The peso would not be allowed to go out of whack.

And why is that? Well, the buyers of the peso bonds would lose a fortune if the peso would depreciate heavily against, say, the US dollars in the next 10 years, or until the maturity date of the peso bonds.

Because when they redeem the bonds 10 years from now, a depreciated peso would mean that they could get far less dollars out of their peso bonds. And yet they bought the bonds precisely with expectations of a stable peso, if not a strong peso.

Surely everybody in the country, including the country’s monetary and fiscal authorities, desires a stable currency. This will give foreign investors confidence in the local currency.

Thus the government can continue to issue more peso bonds in the future. Cheap peso bonds! Which is really not a bad thing. As I said, the government must issue more than $2.5 billion worth of bonds next year.

The the GOOD NEWS.

THE GOVERNMENT must borrow money to cover the expected budget deficit, and it will have to look overseas for that kind of money.

The local capital market is too small for the needs of the government. As a developing country, by definition, the country does not have enough capital.

Previously, the government had to take significant foreign exchange risk because it had to borrow abroad in foreign currencies. Things are a lot different now. The peso is moving the opposite way. Some say it is because the dollar was weakened by the financial meltdown in the United States.

Still, we have those billions of dollars earned by our OFWs. Their remittances should amount to about $20 billion this year, through official channels such banks. The total amount should be more than what is reported by the banking system.

The foreign buyers of the peso bonds must have figured that our OFWs are not likely to stop working overseas in the next 10 years, or until the bonds mature.

Now, the peso bonds should be good news to the OFWs, too. Any borrowing in dollars, either by the government or by the private sector, the domestic capital market would have too much dollars, and more dollars could only mean that the peso would appreciate.

OFWs and exporters would not really jump for joy when the peso gained against foreign currencies.

And so the government’s bond issuance—in peso—should also solve the problem of a steroid boosted peso.

The thing is, the government is not the only local entity borrowing overseas. Private companies borrow dollars as well. In fact, they are bigger dollar borrowers.

Perhaps with the peso bond issuance, the DOF is sending them a message. Let us hope that they get it.
