Finding a place to live when studying in Shanghai

Postby Pewima » Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:04 pm

Hello,

I'm planning to spend a semester studying at the SJTU starting February 2007. The last couple of weeks I've been looking all over the internet for different types of accomodations, costs, etc. but I have to say that there are so many different options that I'm getting a bit confused. So I would like to ask you the following questions:

Do you think that it's possible to find a nice appartment for 1 person (furnished, incl. internet, tv, etc) for about 4000rmb a month? And what type of appartment could I expect for that price category?
Also: what are the best places to live as a (SJTU) student, and do you perhaps have good (or bad) experiences with different estate agents? Or do you perhaps have other tips or ideas?

Thank you very much in advance!

You shouldn't pay more than 3,000 really. Look in Xujiahui and use a local agent once you've arrived rather than one who targets the expat market via this kind of site.

Im currently study in SJTU, and I live alone in an apartment just 5 mins walking to SJTU. It costs RMB 2400, doesnt cost that much. RMB 4000 I think is alot for one person to pay to live alone. Well personally, I recommend you to live in Xujiahui area that's near to the school so you dont have to walk very far, ( or live in the school dorm). I found my current apartment's nice ( fully furnished ) but I dont have any living room. Pewima, if you want to see some of pictures of my apartment, you can feel free to pm me =) ( Since i will be only living in this apartment until end of January 2007 , who knows you might wanna take over ? ;) )
Hope this helps.

At 4000 rmb a month aroung JTU you should be able to find a very nice pad, maybe evena 2 bedroom place with space to spare. Fly out, and then look for a place, its well worth the effort and seeing the places to make that call. You can always stay on campus at the campus hotel/dorms until you find a place.
6 years of experiences, good, bad ugly... and survived.
