Finding an apartment in jingan

Postby hanfeiyi » Tue Jul 01, 2008 6:37 am

What's the best way to go about finding a room to rent in the jingan district? I'll be in shanghai for three months and need a place to stay. I'd prefer to live with other expats. Are there places that list rooms for rent by expats (i.e. not real estate agents)? I'm looking to keep the monthly rent below 3400rmb.

and what's the protocol once you find a room. What do I need to sign if I'm not the original leaser/one who signed the contract? How many months of rent typically need to be paid up front?

many thanks.

There a number of sites that advertise for share accomodation. You just need to google them. I can be harder to find short term because most people prefer longer term so that they don't have the room empty for time and they don't have the change in flat mates around the house. You will need to put up one month's rent and probably one month's security deposit but it is a case by case situation. I'd get a copy of the original lease and change accordingly. Make sure you get a reciept for all monies and also ensure it is very clear how the bills will be handled during your stay and when you leave. Put this into the contract so that you are both clear.
