Hi I Just came across this. No doubt, any of you have already read it.

Did you find it funny??? I don't find it funny at all, not only because it's so badly written - mediocre style and it's trying so hard to be hop onto the bandwagon of sarcastic, pseudo-racist kind of humour - god knows we all love that!! - but it's something about the tone - not enough distance. I'll bet there are times she does feel like that and/or is mirroring a common perception of foreigners here. Which is fine, we are all entitled to think what we like about "others" , but to be printed in the "global daily" (ha!)??

You guys think this is even worth a read??
As it is the papers here are a joke. It's like weekend magazines to get teenagers to read the paper. No critical analysis whatsoever and blinkered insularity.

Anyway, for those who haven't read this - here's the rant for Jan 19th. Enjoy! or, whatever!

Hasn't this been posted somewhere else?

Anyways I thought it was kinda clever.

Other than the marry "our" women thing...I always bristle at that statement, as I was under the impression that women belonged to themselves, and were not the assumed property of the men of the country they were born in.

I think it was the China Daily that after the Olympics published an op-ed that insinuated that Thomas Friedman was more or less a tool of the American government to bring down China by over-praising it and thus giving the Chinese people a big head.

Yeah.

The article quoted some glowing statements Friedman made in an article in the New York Times after the Olympics about how shiny and new the Beijing infrastructure was, how diligent and energetic the Chinese people were, etc. etc. All of these statements were taken to be an insidious new tactic by the "Western Media" to undermine China, this time through praise rather than criticism.

Besides the fact there was nothing new about Friedman's praise of China, something I'm sure the author was well aware of, the New York Times was, last time I checked, not published with the Chinese market predominantly in mind.

Well you have to read it to have an opinion. I thought it was an attempt to be amusing but written by someone with no sense of humour. A college intern on a western newspaper would have had the piece rejected and told to try again. Not worth reading? Not worth reading twice, that's for sure.
