Forum popular with the locals?

Postby FTM » Wed Nov 19, 2008 9:38 am

Does anyone know of any forum for English speaking Chinese (Shanghai only)? Preferably, the forum would be for Moms, like ShanghaiMamas.

Why would locals have a forum in English?

Many of the Chinese I've met read English newspapers (or newspapers in English), watch English-language movies without subtitles and converse in English with each other...all in a bid to improve their language skills. It's reasonable to assume there might be a forum in English for them. I'm sure lots of them read this forum for example!

Cylon,

There's a forum somewhere that connects Chinese returnees. So there must be something out there.

So what youa re looking for is not a "locals" forum in English, rather a returnee's forum. Actually i think that is a really good niche that needs to be serviced as there is a uniques set of advantgages and challenges that many returnees face when coming back.

Sorry I did misunderstand your post then. But your title said "locals" which is confusing. Returning Chinese are not locals.

English speaking Chinese

Many Chinese forums have an "English Corner" board for English-speaking Chinese. I've found them to be pretty boring, though.

Chinese returnees

This is a forum for returning Chinese, it's very business oriented:

As far as I know there is no forum specifically for second-generation "returnees" in English. I don't see why Shanghai Mamas or Shanghai Expat can't fill that role, though.

I'm sorry. I should've kept the 2 groups separate (returning and local)--i assumed both groups would be able to use the same site, but they are quite different in several ways...

my problem is, i'm the expat and my husband is a "returnee" so our lifestyles are quite different from many expats and a majority of locals. It's challenging to find a balance when I'm something of a "halfpat" --a term once used by a member.

Thanks, msittig, I will check out what you suggested.
