Flifox, it is absolutely not some silly trans-tasman rivalry thing. I just disagree that Fosters is 'good beer' (and IMHO the same applies to Sol, Becks, Heineken, Coors Light, Asahi, Becks and even Steinlager).
I will confess I have a slight soft spot for Steinlager. I never drink it in NZ, but the NZ version is a touch hoppier than the other NZ mainstream lagers (DB Export etc.), which almost redeems it. But not much body and I don't much like the taste of the NZ barley. The China version of Steinlager is worse again, and very little hop character, but. . . it stacks up well against some of the foreign brands brewed here (Bud, Tiger etc. . .). So I drink it more in SH than I ever did in NZ (partly because of a lack of choices, and partly because of misplaced patriotism).
But. . . Steinlager recently decided to sell the brewery, and it seems like the taste has changed again. Hadn't drunk any for about three months, and then I had some down at O'Malleys last Friday night. Bloody dreadful! Maybe an aberation of course.
About the beers Mat has on offer. . . Erdinger and Guinness are both good. I like Guinness alot (and the HK/Malaysian versions that are the only ones usually available in China are nice, even if they are rather different to the original). Erdinger is a good beer. There are better wheat beers out there (Schneider Weiss is a classic), but Erdinger is about as good as you will get in Shanghai right now.
If I were Mat I would add Jever Pils, Hoegarden and Duvel as well. If I were running I wine bar I would want a small selection of high quality beers. The above are all classics in their category (German style pilsner, Belgian wheat beer, and Belgian ale), and available in Shanghai.
About quality consistency of Coopers. . . You may have a point. The Coopers stout is great when I drink it in NZ, and never seems so good in China. But I still prefer a slightly off peak Coopers to a Fosters in peak condition.
And finally, I am not getting at Mat. . . just commenting on beer.
I am a beer bore you see, so this is what I do.
Bullit, I might be interested for Friday. The steak sandwich sounds tempting. . . What time are you thinking?
