Geiger Counter in Shanghai??

Postby salamanca0504 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:54 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm not paranoid or whatever about radiations, but a friend of mine (who possibly is :D ) asked me to buy a geiger counter for him. Where can I find those in Shanghai, and at a reasonable price? (I have no idea but I would say, below 100€ (approx. 830 rmb)?

Thanks!

Surely there's an app you can download for your iPhone for that!

You can get them on Amazon, I saw one for about 160 USD but I would say that is at the very low end of the price scale, certainly not laboratory grade. Perfect for paranoid people though.

He said it's for "a friend". It's like saying "a friend" needs to get tested for sexually transmitted disease, where can I (oops I mean where can HE) go? Don't you get it??? :D

A geiger counter might prove very interesting. I've always wondered how much radiation I am exposed to here due to the dust that sweeps into Shanghai from the desert where they tested their a-bombs and from all the uranium coated tiles and stone that are found just about everywhere.

And don’t forget the radioactive rebar, made from irradiated scrap steel, that might have found its way into the construction of local buildings. Domestic scrap yards are supposed to screen for and remove radioactive scrap, but I’ll let you decide whether boss Wang willingly discarded a couple thousand RMB worth of steel to comply with some health regulation.

Oh Jesus, I can see the headlines tomorrow - sales of geiger counters in Shanghai sky rocket. Get them while you still can!

Actually this would become very evident immediately upon the recovery
processing of the metals- The out gassing of radiation would in short order
kill the employees of the smelter, and more than likely, dependent upon the
prevailing winds, a significant number of people within close proximity of
the processor.
Even the overlords here would see where a few thousand RMB are not worth
their lives when the real bosses get involved- Think Melamine milk, et.cetera.

Please do not get me wrong here, I work close to the testing grounds in Xinjiang.
It has not escaped my paranoia that even as only 40 years has passed, that the
early bombs they made were very crude and that is the real danger= perma poison.

Thank you all for your answers. Obviously buying a counter in China is not the best option/value. I'll tell my FRIEND (yes he is^^) to look for one directly from his country, in France.
