General Housing ?

Postby ratty » Wed Jul 14, 2004 12:35 am

Hello all,

Can anyone give me an idea what types of housing is available for expats in Shanghai? When we move over there, we will need at least 2 bedrooms for ourselves and an additional one for my wife's family members who will stay with us. How common are 3 bedroom apartments there?

Thank you very much,
ratty

Definitely findable but probably not cheap, especially if you want a central location and have a low funk tolerance. "Housing for expats" comes much more expensive than apartments in predominantly Chinese neighborhoods...the "Chinese" apartments can be just as nice and I find I like living in the company of Chinese people. Well, usually.

I suggest you search the ads here and on That's Shanghai for a current sampling, with the knowledge that the majority of ads will represent higher-priced housing.

Thanks for the reply. My wife is Chinese and I have visited her family in rural China for several weeks, several times. So my funk tolerance is pretty high. All I want besides space is an average apartment. Nothing fancy or special. I guess I would want it to be nice not to hear the units above, below, and next door. I have big problems with that in my unit here in the states!!

What is That's Shanghai??

thanks.

You should have no problem. Especially if you find a decent agent and give them a budget range. You should be able to come up with a decent 3 BR unti by western standards with not too much problem for under a US $1000 and a great deal if you look around for less than 800.
