Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World

Postby Lesi » Thu Feb 16, 2006 10:16 am

Anyone has this book? I'm willing to buy it. Any ideas?
"Jack Weatherford is a professor of anthropology at Macalester College in Minnesota, and the author of a new biography on the 12th-century Mongolian emperor Genghis Khan. Professor Weatherford argues that Genghis Khan was more than a conqueror, he was also a innovative leader who spread civil reforms throughout his acquired kingdom which spread about 12 million square miles from Siberia to Iraq. According to Jack Weatherford, the Khan dynasty spread ideas of religious freedom, diplomatic immunity, and free trade. After invading a territory they would set up public schools, international currency, postal systems, and introduce technologies including: the cannon, the compass, the abacus, and printing."

Have not seen this but I will look for it.

I read in 'Barbarians & Mandarins' ( abook about early travellers from west to east) that during the Khan's rule you could travel from Hungary to the East Coast of China under a passport of protection issued by the Khanate in more or less total safety. Yes he was a bloody invader but it would also seem that once a territory was invaded law prevailed.
