Going to t¡bet and Nepal solo? HELP!!!!!

Postby lccmjc » Wed May 23, 2007 7:47 am

Just talked to my boss today, he finally agreed to give me one to two months off after summer. Will come to Shanghai to visit mom for a week, then I am off to the west. Ok, here is the thing... I will be going there all by myself( I do not have any friend in China anymore) and I want to rough it. I've never done backpacking in my life before, so I am a bit concerned about the safty issue(yeah yeah I am chickshit i know~). Could anyone please give me some tips on going to t¡bet/nepal solo? And what is the best/fast way to meet the other fellow travellers when I get there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

do not advise u to go alone. the situation specialy in Nepal is not stable yet. and to go to t¡bet you need some permission from goverment institutions, i think. but good luck!!!

Thanks elenaelena for the advise!
However I still have my chinese citizenship(i just renewaled my passport last year), will I still need permission from the Gov to enter t¡bet?
For Nepal.. I am hoping that I can make some friends in t¡bet, so I will not be going alone...

Elenaelena is right, don't go soloing around especially in Nepal. Nepal and t¡bet are not for backpackers as you're not allowed to move around freely. New problems have arisen due to some stupid American Students raising banners in t¡bet, now making it almost impossible for foreigners to leave Lhasa to see the real t¡bet.

I think Nepal is ok now for backpacking. It's mostly media coverage that makes it seem dangerous. We were there about 6 mos. ago and found the attitude to be very welcoming towards tourists and backpackers since they represent much needed cash. There are lots of companies that guide groups of backpackers through the countryside and this may be your best bet for safety and campanionship.

Also, many Nepalese think highly of the Chinese since they are lending a lot of money for development projects.
