Good Hair Cuts for Men

Postby Nichols » Wed Jun 09, 2010 11:59 am

I am looking for a cheap place (under 70kuai) to get a really great haircut. I have been to the expensive places (about 200RMB) and they hardly seem worth it. I have been to the really cheap places (20 kuai) and the results have been less than satisfying. Anyone know of a "middle-of-the-road" option?

There's one on Changde Lu, just opposite the One Park Avenue complex. A big salon. Lots of (older) staff, not the gay looking young guys, a very professional looking set up. Best haircuts I've ever had. Just under your 70rmb, think I paid 60 plus. No English but my sign language worked. I hope it's still there, haven't been for a few weeks now.

there are some haircutters at dagu lu (crossroad shimen lu), prices start at 68 for a standard haircut incl. headmassage and 2xwashing. "Alizé" for example got english speaking staff, which can be quite helpful :)

there's a chain shop called Salon88. The price is from 38 to 58 depending on the level of staff you choose, the JinQiao branch is my favorite visit among all outlets. All the time I could find many other expats there. So you can image how many expat-serving experiences these staff have accumulated. Most of them have basic english ability to communicate, best of all, they know our needs. But remember to choose the 58, the more skilled person(because the JinQiao branch is the flagship shop, the experienced staffs in this shop are selected from other branches). The 38-level person is too young to trust.
The boss is a French and seems to have some connection with Carrefour. You could find Salon88 alomost in each Carrefour.
Anyway, you could try JinQiao branch and GuBei branch which is the biggest two amount all.

i get my hair cut by an English bloke called Steve who set up his own salon last year, and as he's a 1 man band, he does the cutting, no one else. He also does my wifes hair and a number of her friends.

price is 200rmb for me, but I think worth it just not to have the hassle.

PM me if you want details.

i go to mine at www.hc-sh.com (Xuhui District, Donghu road No. 20 Unit 1-2) for 80rmb, but why the save when you know you can't get satisfying look at 30-50rmb, i have tried so many times that i decided to spent my 80rmb as the right way

i'm sure foreign countries cost much more so it's a treat here for getting a haircut that cost 80rmb, besides you probably cut your hair once a month, so leave that 80rmb aside from your pay

yeah, 200rmb is too much furthermore for men

another one near one park, 30rmb for cut and wash. it's on wuding lu, between jiaozhou rd and changde rd opposite the pancake house. if you're coming from one park and you see munchies then you've already passed it.
pretty nice place but a bit small, one of the better hair dressers i've been to here.

i had haircuts here for 20RMB and 200RMB and to be honest, i think the result was always pretty much the same :) big plus for the more expensive studios is that it's very clean and that theres always some staff speaking english.

I just tried the same place. Prices are either 58 or 88, and they did a decent job. I have never seen anybody look so confused about curly hair before though. Poor guy didn't know what to make of it.

I went to a shop on Xikang Lu (I think it's ~#200), near Beijing Lu
30 RMB for haircut + double shampoo : result is quite good regarding my expectations. No english spoken, but I made me understand with my poor chinese and hand signs !
You can also ask for a "hair-designer" to take care of you, it costs 75 RMB

my recommendation, 星工坊 Xing Gong Fang, Huangpi Bei Lu No. 251 along Nanjing West Road. Beside JW Marriott Shanghai Tomorrow Square, Near People Square.

69rmb and look for stylist Yu Fei, very skilled with great patience and service

Unfortunately good western haircuts aren't available in this country. Just buy yourself a pair of clippers and watch some YouTube tutorials. My hair looks 100 times better than if I get some Slash look-alike at the local salon to do it.

OP the most versatile haircut is the mullet.
Business at the front, party at the back. The coiffure classic of heavy metal bands and Westies.
Works for men and woman alike, infact is the first truly androgynous do.

Shave your head. It is free if you do it yourself and is a nice clean look.

How does 8 RMB sound for a total beard trim and tittle off the top and sides - you are such victims.
Works well with the suit BTW. "Dozens of kuai..." Research. Off the bum and research. Don't need a PhD to save coin.Jees.

Sure the lad used CUTTER but they were as blunt as a Cockney 'umour, but I was shaved like a cut new client with blood and all.

Only if you've got the skull shape to pull it off. A lot of dudes have weird bulbous heads with bony protrusions, sunken spots on the cranium, and sick-ass wrinkles like a sharpe dog on the back on their neck.
Image

(On second thought, those people usually don't look good with hair either. There are always exceptions)

Here's an example of a person with a well shaped skull who pulls off the shaved head and actually looks pretty good:
Image
Brittany can pull of just about any hairstyle, because she has the skull for it.

On the other hand, take a look at former model turned actress Cameron Diaz with a shaved head:
Image With hair she's pretty hot, but with her gigantic cranium exposed she looks like E.T.

Sorry if that sounds mean, I actually enjoyed the film she did this for quite a bit and think she's a tremendously talented actress. But the point still stands, NOT EVERYONE LOOKS GOOD WITH A SHAVED HEAD.

Now take a look at this guy:
Image

Granted, this guy probably won't be winning any beauty contests with or without hair, but with all those weird Godzilla bumps in the middle of his skull, if he has the option, she should grow some hair to cover them.

This woman is also pretty hot with a shaved head:
Image
I'm not actually making a point here, I just wanted to post the picture.

Not all skulls are created equal. Image Consult a phrenologist if you have to, but if you are capable of growing a full head of hair and are still considering shaving your head because some female impersonator on a web forum said it looks neat, ask yourself this one question in all honesty: Do I have the skull for it?

To be honest, I think the shaved (or very short buzz cut) head is about the safest bet a guy can go for, regardless of the shape of their skull. In terms of sharpness, style (it's been in fashion for years and years now), and attracting women, it's just about as good a bet as it gets.
