Greek Yogurt/No sugar/fat yogurt

Postby Pinche » Thu Feb 09, 2012 2:47 pm

I've been on the lookout for a cheaper version of Greek Yogurt. Fage is super expensive (30 kuai for 170g at city shop) and there was an Australian at ole that was cheaper, but it no longer available. I saw this thread from earlier, but were looking for some more recent replies. I'm not averse to making it, but I'm not entirely convinced on the quality of the ones I've found. Any recommendations on where to get greek yogurt or where to get a yogurt machine (that uses milk and not culture packets like the EasiYo).

Thanks
Pinche

Ambrosia is now also selling greek yogurt. I recently bought one at Carrefour Zhongshan Park. I think it was 8 kuai for 100g. I haven't tried it yet. I actually wanted to use it as a starter to make my own yogurt :) The ingredients sound better than their plain yogurt which contains milk powder :|

I think taobao is still the best option to get a yogurt maker. Actually you can either use starter packets or plain yogurt as starter with any yogurt machine :) It's up to you really.

I use starter packs and a yougurt maker i got on taobao.
There is a huge difference using different brands of milk here though. I used trial and error to find a brand that gave a thickish yougurt (cant remember which one it was now as i am away from shanghai but it was one of the more expensive ones).
You need to look on the nutritional info and chose a brand with a high protien content. I have a feeling that skim milk is made by adding water to normal milk here so it usually gives a thinner yougurt (it should give a thicker yougurt as you take out the fat should be replaced by protien).
I also made nice thick yogurt by adding some unsweetened condenced milk and/or uht cream to the batch (but that obviously increases costs).

OP, Amphora, on Hong Mei Road sells yoghurt at their shop, but haven't tried it, so not sure whether or not it's authentic.

My go-to for yogurt is Paul's All Natural from Oz. Best I've had here so far.

I've been to Media Markt on Huaihuai Lu today and they had 3 kind of Joyoung yoghurt makers. Price was between 90 something and 200 kuai. (Somewhere near the rice cookers)

The 'Amphora' yoghurt is really good but is like 30 kuai so.............

What about the one that "Avocado Lady' has??, is not as good as the one from Amphora but is not bad at all.

After I read thread about Homemade Bread, where Mr. Totomolo's also explains how to make your own yogurt, I got the yogurt machine and I am off the yogurt grid now :)

(Should be on page 2)

But when you use the Amphora yoghurt as starter you could make (erh was it up to 8 or 10 times) new yoghurt with it.
Does the Amphora yoghurt tastes sour?

Haven't tried the yoghurt from the Avo Lady either, but will do next time I venture that way.

I've tried Paul's, and a few others from Carrefour and City Shop, but either the refrigeration during transportation is not adequate, or the storage at the stores in not, because it tends to curdle very quickly once I get it home. :( One of the nicest I had was from Bebemamie, but you need to order a lot of bottles from them.
