i have no serious answer or real value to add to this topic, but i'm planning on going out tonight, so i hope they're open.

I think the national grieving days are only symbolic and don't necessarily mean all of China is shut down.

You think wrong.

Technically, "Entertainment venues" are supposed to close down. KTV's and the like. Western venues, and restaurants are usually ok, but they must be low key. Live music is probably technically not allowed.

Grieving of any kind or are we grieving something specific?
I'm grieving the irrelevance of my prior local knowledge, that is of no use in this city/country.

there's nothing in the news about a 'grieving day', usually it is announced, such as in April for the Earthquake victims, etc.

Now I remember, last time China declared a day of mourning they replaced the music on FM89.7 with a dull discussion.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Nationwide mourning activities will be held on Sunday for the victims of the massive mudslide in Gansu province.
According to a statement by the State Council, national flags will fly at half-mast in the country and its embassies and consulates overseas.

Public entertainment will also be suspended on Sunday.

Our track racing finals was cancelled due to the mud slide, yea yea yea its such an inconvenience and a relative small amount of people perished but you didnt exactly see mardi gras back in full force the year of katrina. Sometimes people in better situations need to be reminded of the less fortunate, even if its at the trivial expense of one day of no entertainment in tribute of people who have lost their lives in a horrible accident.

A bunch of large events that were scheduled for today were canceled as well. Guess it's time to clean the apartment.

the landslide disaster in Gansu province

Flags at half mast, no fun to be had today, and this morning there were ceremonies held to commemorate the victims. It's the 7th day since the landslide, hence a day of grieving

Yeah I was in Paramount on Saturday night when suddenly the "ugly lights" came on and we were told that they were closing.....It took them a further hour to stop serving and I think we left half an hour after that. It was probably a good thing as the place was swamped with 16 year old International students...and they probably needed to be home around that time anyway. I felt very old. :(

All the lights on the Bund and Pearl Tower were off the whole night. Didn't stop the 10 million tourists from trying to take photos of the Pearl Tower though.

Pretty much all TV stations were just rebroadcasting whatever CCTV-1 was showing. And ICS rebroadcasted CCTV-9; I never thought I'd miss ICS...
