New into Shanghai, can anybody recommend a hairdresser that can cut curly hair without creating a disaster

No problem in China. With relatively low labor costs they use the old method. They first straighten the hair, cut it, and then re-curl it. Not a big deal here in a country of fake curls.

Well, I had a very nice shampoo and head massage but the haircut made me look like a poodle. Next time I think I'll just get the shampoo and massage and spend the rest of my money on fancy ponytail holders.

Spoke too soon. After a wash, it actually looked pretty good. The salon is BIS in Times Square. The stylist is Emi Ohata. As you might guess by the name, she's Japanese and the salon seems to cater mostly to a Japanese clientele (I took a friend along who speaks Japanese but I think their were people on staff who spoke English).
