Harry Potter?

Postby johnqh » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:33 am

Hi all,

I am visiting Shanghai from June to July. The problem is, I will be missing Harry Potter 5 the movie and 7 the book.

So, how do we get to watch the movie and watch the book? Will any local theater show the movie in English on the same day as US? Where can I buy the book on the day it is released?

I am guessing that I will have to wait until I come back home to watch the movie, but I really hope to find a place to find the book.

It will probably be shown at UME in Xintiandi in English with Chiese subtitles/

Some movies are supposed to be watched on big screens, and I have a projector with 100 inch screen set up at home in San Francisco, so even if I want to watch on DVD, I would watch it at home (SF) - then I would as well watch it when I come back.

Thanks for the UME tip. I will keep an eye on it.

Does any bookstore sell original English books on the release day?

Yes, the bookstores that sell English books will have Harry Potter on the release date. City supermarket will have it. Hotels will have it.

Or you can buy a copy for a fraction of the price.

OMG!!

I am SO glad someone else asked this, it has been on my mind since I arrived. Pathetic big kid that I am. I'd been told you couldn't buy the English version for several months as Chinese censors went through it. This, however, is brilliant..
Yay for book reading!! :)

Now... if only I get work up the courage to post regarding is blutac really doesn't exist in this country.

Generic, are you talking about fake books? cause if so, steer me in the right direction. I'm sure I'm not the only one paying way too much to have books shipped over, or buying books here.......... Or are you talking about just buying the DVD.

Actually, I also want to buy some Chinese fake Harry Potter books, even if just for laughs. Isn't there one with Harry Potter overeating and become really fat?

^ that is in chinese only.

the fake harry potters are mainly in chinese as china participates in the world-wide release, but it in english. the chinese-edition is usually 3 months or so later. english versions can be found after the initial release, but why bother? they aren't usually that funny, although they could make for a nice collection!

don't worry topeastie... you will be able to pick up your copy when everyone else does! and if you speed-read, you will know the outcome before they do!

I can't remember clearly, but I am sure HP4 (Goblet of fire) was released here the same time it was everywhere else. Others will be able to correct me if not. I saw it in Xiu Jia Hui, and it was very enjoyable. I must also say that the audience were neither loud nor obnoxious (I had heard bad tales of Chinese audiences) so the whole experience was great. Although I was close to the front and got scared in the dragonny bit.

If you are super keen to lock down a copy of the book, you could phone ahead to one of the bookstores and reserve it. I may do that with the nice bookstore in Carrefour. But there is also Chaterhouse in Times Square, and if City Supermarket are going to stock it, you have a range of choices for where to go.

And on top of that, if you know where you will be staying, I think Amazon would be able to deliver it to you. You might have a couple of days wait, but......

So many options!

Magnolia - I might even try and pull a sickie from work so I can read it :)

Harry Potter and China are starting to be linked in my mind. Book 6 came out the morning after I returned to Australia after my last trip. I'd been backpacking for a while, had no clean clothes, was sick as, but I made the walk (READ: stumble) into the city to get the book and then locked myself in my room for 24 hours to read it. It pissed off all my college friends who wanted to see me after the trip away, but really - when it comes down to it, Harry Potter will always win over friends :)
