A 3rd type of HD DVD is being introduced by China, to add to your perplexion on how and if to upgrade your dvd player. Release date is ~8/2008

This was not the best link, but other websites were clear that DVD player makers will have sub-$200 HDDVD players that will output 1080i by the end of this year. These will support HDDVD but not BluRay.

(ask your local friends where to download them for free online, then get a graphics card for your PC with an hdmi output, assuming your tv has an hdmi input)
