My boyfriend and I are moving to Shanghai in a few days to go to Jiao Tong University. We want to live in an apartment compex near the school in XuHui (XujiaHui).
We want :
- to be near the metro since we won't have a car
- either one or two bedroom, or a bedroom with office
- near a gym, or have one in the complex
- near grocery stores and entertainment if possible
- and be around 3800-4100 (flexible)

You'll have no trouble finding something, and you'll be close to a major shopping complex that has both a gym and a supermarket. Get oriented around the school, then hit some of the local real estate offices. Tell them your budget is 3000rmb as they will show you higher priced places anyway. If you don't speak Chinese, better to find someone to go with you and translate. Plan to pay a 35% fee to real estate broker -- some say you can bargain on this, and some say renters never pay... but I think it varies depending on the realtor, and the price range you're renting in. The two times I've rented, I've paid it.
