Hey mate,

Haven't had time to chat to you recently but I am well stacked here with 3 libraries right in the city.

Looking to go down and check out some books and not actually having to download them and read on the PC for once.

Give me a few suggestions, you have never let me down in the past.

Cheers

I really enjoyed the kite runner. First book I read for about six months and finished in less than a week.

Now reading the Whit Man's Burden by William Easterly: 'Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good' as well as The Last Oil Shock. Both very interesting.

As a Sci-fi Fan, have to suggest Frank Herbert's Dune series. On the fourth book now (again, as I started it again in the summer, but didn't finish) Good reading. Skip the movies & read the books.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!

If you are a SCI FI fan you run...don't walk to the book store and get ALL of Peter Hamilton's books. The best one is the Fallen Dragon, the Neutronium Alchemist series is also good (but gets a little bit cheesy during the middle of the second book). He is similar to, but much much better than Neil Stephanson and/or William Gibson.

If you can't find them in Shanghai, then I will be willing to let you come over and raid my library. Will be back in SH on the 18th of January.

I went through an Amy Tan phase whilst going through a John Irving phase and read practically everything they wrote. Each and every Amy Tan book made me cry hysterically. People sitting next to me on planes thought I was afraid to fly or something. As John Irving dealt with the same subject matters as AT (families being ripped apart, abandonment, being misunderstood, people being wrongly punished, etc.), I spent some time with a hankie pinned to my hip. "mei mei" "mei mei" :(

Hahaha, did the same thing. I think the part that made me cry was how immature and NASTY that little girl was to her mum, and when Amy Tan describer her moher's feeling I was just crying out soo loud, because now I know how my mother felt when I was 8,9. I was such a little bastard.

Therouxs book is set in India and has three seemingly seperate but ultimately cleverly interlinked tales of sex, debauchery and paradise lost in Mumbai. The title refers to the best suite at the Taj Hotel in Bombay. Class act. Love the 'murder by elephant' story...

The Story Of A China Practice is all about Dezshira's first 15 years in China and is an instant China classic - the best story being the British surgeon getting arreested at Pudong for imported plastic penises in his hand luggage when they were actually medical models for a urology conference to Shanghais doctors;

Umberto Eco's book is all about the concept of Ugliness over the centuries and societies view of what is ugly and why, a sequel to his last book 'On Beauty'

The Shakespeare bio is just that - and Bill Bryson (A short history of nearly everything) just a great job in working out man from myth.

Oh. And the Dangerous Book For Boys, and the December issue of Hustler were also great.

I have to agree. Really enjoyed his Shakespere bio and have to say I learned a lot from it. Not just about Shakespere but some other playwrites of the time and just how much influence Shakespeare had on the English language.

But then i read Bryson's Down Under and found it quite long winded. But I think it was one of his earlier books. His writing style has really developed and the guy is very funny. The book had the fight chapter of his latest book Thunderbolt Kid and it seemed quite good as well.

Really enjoyed that Shakespeare bio though. So much more interesting then most books of the same.

Its a great photo as well as the others from that series you took. I also recall a photo on Shanghiist looking like a copy (which i pointed out to you and we conversed about) but you say it wasn't one of yours.

Anyway, I had photos of that series as my avatar for msn for months and it always got a lot of comments.

You really, really, really need to publish a photo book.
