As a teacher, I would advise anyone who wants to homeschool their children in any location to request a copy of their home state or province's grade standards. This will give you a target goal in each subject area of what your child should be accomplishing. If you can go beyond these goals, good for you, but if you fall short of these it will likely cause difficulty for your child when they return to their home.

Also, as another tip, because of the no child left behind testing requirements, there are many workbooks with grade specific practice tests available commercially. I saw many when I in the local Barnes and Noble when I was visiting home. I'm sure they are available through their website as well.

If you are only going to be in China for a year, try to get in contact with a teacher (or teachers) of the grade level that your child will return to after being away. They should be able to provide you with useful information on what skills that child will be expected to have entering that grade level. If you stay abroad is an extended one, I would suggest doing the same thing the year before you would return.

For high school students out of their home countries, you may want to consider an independent study high school program. The state of North Dakota has one of the most comprehensive programs in the US. This would allow your child to get their high school diploma without needing to attend classes.

Last, I would try to keep in mind that the public school grade standards should be taken as the lowest level of acceptable achievement. Keep in mind your child's abilities and what having one-on-one attention could help them to achieve. Many students are capable of far more of than these standards.

Please feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Great to read all this experience for homeschooling in shanghai. I'm just starting to research the topic after feeling pretty underwhelmed with the quality of education and price of education in Shanghai.

Does anyone know how to connect directly with existing homeschooling parents / groups here?

thanks!

Hi, I homeschooled our two daughters for several years while abroad. I used both English and Dutch as language of instruction. Once back home (Belgium), the children were tested and subsequently been advanced one full grade level (local schools) . From September 2009 on, both girls will attend an international school (language of instruction English) again.
For us, homeschooling the children has definitely been a success! I loved every part of it (I am a scientist with a masters in education). Our children are bilingual English-Dutch and speak Mandarin and French. that would never have been possible if they had not been homeschooled. Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns about homeschooling!

This one looks very nice but is exclusively for Christians. Our family would not qualify.

Sigh...and to think I'm the husband. I had the impression she has a few links to other homeschooling groups in her blog. She's probably taken them down.

I think kids should learn how to get along with other children, homeschool may be not good for their growth...

and you obviously have no clue about homeschooling - while a small minority homeschool to segregate their kids from others this is rarely the case and instead most homeschooled kids are exceptionally well socialized and adept individuals

Or else we should stop using the term "homeschooling" and say "alternative education". Homeschoolers tend to get together in groups, so that their children may enjoy the company of other children.

Interestingly, royalty in the past used to be schooled by governesses or tutors. The school system we see today comes from the Prussians. Coming to think of it, there is a reason why English private schools are called "public schools"...

:?: Anybody know if any of the international schools allow homeschoolers to attend a class or two? I'd really like my boys to have the lab experience with their Chemistry course next term. We have a tutor for Biology and there are loads of virtual dissection websites, but there just isn't anything remotely similar for Chemistry. I've looked on several school websites and can't find any information on tuition.

Hello there,

Are you part of a homeschooling group in Shanghai? I am looking for more information on homeschoolers as that is what we will be doing with our 8 year old boy when and if we get to Shanghai soon.

I'm a chemist so I'll be glad to help with chemistry experiments in any group that we join.

I'm not part of a group. Don't know if a group actually meets regularly here. Shanghai is so big and spread out it would be difficult for the expat homeschoolers to get together. Also, I'm in the minority... my boys are in high school. Would love to get together, though. My husband and I are biologists, but I think our dilemma is getting lab equipment and supplies.

Getting lab equipment is easy in Shanghai. Go to Beijing Xie Lu. This street is just north of Nanjing Xie Lu. There are dozens and dozens of tiny little lab supply stores there. You can buy many different kinds of chemicals there as well as lab equipment. Obviously you dont want to buy major stuff but you can pick up quite a lot of smaller items like glass ware etc.

Great! I'm just off Nanjing and can see Beijing from my window. I've walked down Beijing several times but can't remember seeing any of these stores. What do they look like? Are they closer to Jin An Temple or People's Square area?

They are closer to the river. Walk east on Beijin Lu from your place. You should start to see lots and lots of tiny little hardware stores. Then, the stores should transition into lab supply stores. They are tiny little places for the most part but some of them are more full size. They look like any other store in that area...nothing special.

I havent been to that area since 2005 so I suppose it is possible all that has changed. But when I was there, it looked like everything (lab equipment included) had been there decades.

good luck.

Are you still homeschooling in SH? We are homeschooling 2 kids - 6 and 4.5 yrs old. We'd like to meet like minded people to share experiences and resources. We started about 4 months ago and all is going really well, and we'd like to find out how others kids and parents are going.

I will be moving to Shanghai within the next few months, and homeschool my 12-yr-old son. I would love to be a part of a secular homeschooling group if there is such a thing. Feel free to contact me.

In response to a previous post, homeschooled kids usually have as active a social life if not more. Usually, the same amount of effort that goes into teaching, is also exterted in parents giving them more meaningful extra-curricular activities, such as sports, music, etc with their peers.

Caps and hats off to parents who do it. A+ and most definitely top of the class.

Hi all,
I also will move ( back ) to Shanghai , maybe in december or january 2010. We lived there before ( first daughter was born there back in 2002). And this time I think, I will do homeschooling ( we have a 7 y.o and 3 y.o girls)
There are a few groups in Shanghai as I found out from :
http://www.shanghaihomeschool.com/
And the yahoo group for Pudong's group ( I think) is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shanghaihomeschoolers/

Right now we are in Malaysia, and our daughter goes to a school that use homeschool method ( learning at their own pace) , since we will be moving in the middle of the China's school year , we will continue to teach her using the same curriculum from her current school.

Any family in pudong that homeschool their kids here?

Hi, I am a science teacher and when I don't have time or ressources I need for an experiment I go on youtube and download experiments other teachers have filmed in their classes. I show that to my students with a beamer. It's not quite the same thing but better than just textbook stuff! Also, a lot of universities offer their own teaching channels on youtube. Good luck!

I'm returning to Shanghai and might have to homeschool for a few months but i have a few concerns

1. My daughter hates it when i even help her with homework , how am i going to be able to teach her?( I've coached her hockey teams and i've taught other kids in schools but sitting down and trying to teach her something frustrates her to no end)
2. She is super social and loves to be around kids and talk about boys and things girls talk about, i'm not sure how i can make sure she has outside the family social time everyday?
