i think you should have a credit card before you can book to CTRIP.

oh my! the last time i called them they does not want to book us because i dont have a credit card, even though i have a registered CTRIP card

The credit card thing is there as a precaution or something. I usually book via my friend who works for ctrip, if I make bookings - I think it depends on the agent you get whether you need to provide credit card details or not.

I can recommend a few sub-300 hotels in Hangzhou I stayed in before :)

Go to english.ctrip in the internet.
Join the membership, you log in and put your password.
You do not need to call to book, you can book through their website.
No credit card necessary, was able to book hotels in beijing, qingdao this way.

I am an established Ctrip member but still needed credit card to guarantee the hotel booking (they take one night fee if you don't show).

Strange, I booked last summer for Qingdao and there was no need for Credit card number...

Yes it's not really a problem, it's just a guarantee. I don't know if it depends on the policy of the hotel you book. But it's no big deal and for sure, CTRIP rocks!
